This beach will take your breath away. The Na Pali coastline is so beautiful and majestic, it is hard to put into words. Even though its not a great swimming beach, the bumpy road is well worth the trip to see the view alone.

While in Kauai, we nicknamed this the "Most Beautiful Beach in the World" Absolutely georgeous and not crowded at all. Stay to the right and take the dirt road all the way until it ends to get close to where the beach and mountain reach each other.

Just remember that RENTAL CAR POLICIES ARE VOID IF YOU DRIVE TO THIS BEACH. If anything happens all costs for getting out is assumed by the renter. We found out the hard way. It is in the fine print of the rental car companies rental agreement folders. Our car broke down and we had to pay HUGE $$$ to get out. Hertz Car Rental said that even though it was a mechanical failure, since we went out there it was our responsibility. They said all car rentals have same policy.
Dec 13, 2006 10:19AM
@ TIM: You should have called a tow truck to pull you to the road, then called the rental car company.

I'm planning a trip to Polihale in July. This may be a stupid question cause there are always waves, but how is the surf that time of the year?

@ Chris - Check out seasonal surf trends for a graph that shows average wave height by month and area.

THE most gorgeous unspoiled place! It is tricky getting out there (not for the faint hearted) but well worth it. Go well before sunset - they're amazing.

The longest white sandy beach in Hawaii! Polihale means in Hawaiian "A leeping Off place for spirits" or "House of Death". It is full of mystery and spirit. The best star gazing on the planet. What goes on in the sky there is "unconfirmed". Drive slow getting there, don't ever drink the water from the various faucets, pack out your own trash, don't drive a two wheel drive into the sand, wear plenty sun screen, don't even think of swimming if you are not an above average swimmer when get waves, nowadays look out for speeding SUV's on the sand, try listen for the goats on the cliffs, feed the chickens and cats, wear your sandles or get 3 inch Keawe up your heel, leave if it starts to rain and you don't have four wheel drive....say hello to the County of Kauai park recreation guys...they are the best and have been doing the job there for a hundred years before you were born.....they can tell you a lot.
Feb 05, 2007 8:21AM
Don't turn around when you encounter the road, the beach and waves takes your breath away when you finally reach the destination. The sunset was worth the 40 minute drive for 4.2 miles of rough terrain!

My Family and I have visited Kauai twice already and planning our third visit in October. We really had a hard time finding a beach (believe it or not!!). One strip of beach almost sucked my aunt into the Ocean.. PERMANENTLY.. I'm looking into the comments made for all the beaches and pretty much they all warn "STRONG CURRENTS" So where do we go with small children? I did like the one at Princeville even though it was a very small patch of land.

@ Denise: Do you mean you had a hard time finding a suitable beach for swimming with your family? If you go to the home page and click on "Kid and Family-friendly Beaches" you get a list of the following beaches: Anini, Lydgate, Kalapaki, Poipu Beach Park and Salt Pond. All are great for kids - current ocean conditions permitting.
Apr 11, 2007 10:21AM
so this beach is drivable or not? whats the best way to get there and what do you need? An SUV, jeep is a basic car fine just be careful???

Can't wait to visit this beach in two weeks!! Always nice to go back to Kauai...

Hi all:
What TIM said is true. ANY car rental company has " fine print " that tells you to say off dirt, gravel or rough roads. Personally not sure if I'd chance it. It does look very nice though.
Can you hire a taxi to take you there and come back to pick you up.? Has anyone done this before? or is it just too costly? Is it more costly to have your rental vehicle break down, and have to pay HUGE $$$$$$$$$$.?( U.S. $$ )

I am planning for my wedding in Kauai in August. In anybody's opinion, would this be a good spot? Everybody seems to really like it, but would it be worth it? I've paid good money for a high-tech photographer, and would love to have amazing pictures. Would Polihale beach be a good place with permitable weather? Thanks!
Apr 19, 2007 3:09PM
I live on Kauai and can tell you a taxi is not the way to go...I don't even think they would take you there. Your insurance is canceled on your rental if you take it down this road, but I've seen Mustangs driving to Polihale regularly. This road is probably the worst you'll ever see in your life but the sunset is worth it. Drive slow and if you get stuck call a tow company not the rental place. It'll save you money.
Apr 25, 2007 7:08PM
@ Tiffannie: It's a beautiful beach and I'm sure a wedding at sunset would be absolutely gorgeous!! However, I'm not sure a five mile, 35 minute rough terrain drive (one way)would be worth it. I would try getting there by boat if possible.
If you're planning a small wedding party, you might want to consider it. If it's a large party, you might want to reconsider. We drove a Dodge Magnum to get to Polihale and all we did was bounce around like popcorn kernels. The only vehicles we saw doing more than 5 miles per hour were lifted off-road pickup trucks and Jeeps. Aside from that, everyone was driving at the same pace we were....Good luck on whatever you decide and I wish you well on your wedding.
May 21, 2007 11:21PM
If you want a beautiful wedding on the westside of Kauai with the alway clear weather and beautiful sunset, you will surely fine it the most romantic place to get married.
Jun 19, 2007 9:04AM
I've heard the road is bad, but is it really any problem if you have a Jeep Wrangler?
Jun 19, 2007 9:01PM
Jeff - you don't need a Jeep for this road. Resist temptation to go on the sand if you do rent a 4WD - the sand is super soft and it's illegal. Polihale is a nice big beach, very hot and the ocean is super powerful.
Jun 23, 2007 6:45PM
Be aware that rouge waves are common on this stretch of beach. I was well away from the water one afternoon, rarely would a wave come close enough to wet my toes. Suddenly, a huge wave came in, knocked me over and rolled me over and over in the sand-and then almost sucked me out to sea. I had to shampoo my hair 3 times finally get all of the sand out of it. It is beautiful though and well worth the drive.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 24, 2007 7:32AM
The term "rogue wave" suggests that these are waves that are random and unpredictable - something I have not seen in my 25+ years in Kauai waters. Every beachgoer should be aware of the fact that waves come in sets of much larger waves. This, combined with a rising tide or swell probably was the cause of Amanda's sandy hairdo. People have also been swept off of rocks from large waves so always watch the ocean and be aware that it is constantly changing. WW
Jul 06, 2007 12:20AM
Dear Amanda and Kauai Explorer staff,
I'm sorry you were dragged out by a big wave, Amanda...just wanted to let you know that it was a "ROGUE" wave, and not a "ROUGE"..which means red, in French. Rogue as in a loner, a bad guy, a pirate! Not rouge..as in Moulin Rouge, rouge for my cheeks, etc.
aloha, and safe swimming!

This destination is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been. My brother and sister in law got married on this beach. It was worth the two round trips on the rugged terrain to get there for the wedding. They had a small wedding party, but we drove a Mustang, a Jeep, and a Malibu out, and the Jeep was by far the way to go. But like I said, well worth it! Cannot wait to go back next year!
Jul 19, 2007 4:06AM
We drove our rental car (a Hertz Toyota Camry) all the way down the dirt road.
It was a bumpy ride, but the black dirt was hard and dry. The car never bottomed out or anything. This was in late August early Sept.
It also didn't take 35 or 40 minutes to get to the end after the paved road ended. Maybe 15 or 20 minutes.
If you stay on the paved road it leads up to the cliffs/mountian and the Navy has a fence that stops you. They keep all of the propellants for the rockets that they shoot off at the Naval station at the south end of that beach there.
We are going back next month!

This is the most beautiful beach in the world & it is also the most powerful in many ways. This is not a beach for swimming! I highly recommend keeping your vehicles off the beach, just because you see other trucks on it doesn?t mean it?s easy to do. Every time I?m there we help pull out tourists out of the soft sand. It takes about 30 min to get in, looks like Danny was driving pretty fast. When entering drive slow, show your respect to this area by taking whatever you brought in out with you & show respect to the local's & we will respect you. Be safe, we want you to make it home using your airline seat.

Polihale is an awesome place, being there is a spiritual experience. I've been there several times over the years and am just amazed every time I go back.
My wife and I found Polihale several years ago when searching for the perfect sunset, we found it. I've been there in both the winter and summer, neither time is good for swimming but the summer you can at least walk into the water a little :)
We always go to the end of the beach, which I think is called Macau Point, where the cliffs jet out into the ocean.
Headed back to Kauai in August and planning on camping here for one night just to experience the beach sunset thru sunrise.
Absolutely awesome beach, worth every bump in the road.

Yup - truth is that tourism is completely mismanaged all over Kauai. It's not the visitor's fault, just that there is no enforcement or infrastructure support from the government agencies who are tasked to provide these services. Kauai is an amazingly beautiful island and it makes economic sense to preserve that beauty.
Aug 15, 2007 8:39AM
My wife and I visited Polihale Beach in 1988 during our honeymoon. The big difference now is that Hurricane Ikini washed out lots of the large dunes that gave the beach privacy. Be that as it may, the beach is still the most gorgeous on the planet.
Sure, the drive is a bit troublesome. Just take it slow and avoid the deeper potholes (you can't dodge them all!), and you will be rewarded with a beach to die for. The wide, white beach, the view if Niihau, the dramatic decent of the Napali cliffs right down to the beach.....it simply is the beach of a lifetime. We visited again with our kids in July 2007, and weren't disappointed. Skip the crowded beaches....they are a dime a a dozen in the states. Don't waste your precious time in Poipu. That's just the greedy developers going after your cash.
If you want a truly great and unforgettable experience, rent a car (to heck with the agreement, this is your life!) and head to Polihale. You will relive the visit forever. We have done so for the past 19 years.
Mark Artusio
P.S. While you're there, drive up to the Waiamea Canyon and take the chopper tour of Kauai. To see the inside of Mt. Waialeale is breathtaking!
P.P.S. E-Mail me with your thoughts on your visit.

This sounds like an absolutely beautiful beach. I see individuals continuing to say don't drive on the sand. Is there a parking area for vehicles?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 16, 2007 11:08AM
It is beautiful and there is plenty of parking. Some people just like to race up and down the beach in 4WD vehicles (prolly trying to use up all the gas so we can convert to alternative fuels).
Sep 03, 2007 1:57PM
The road is bumpy, by far not the worst I\'ve been on, just take it slow. Make sure you bring plenty of water. It\'s a beautiful beach, but the water could be treacherous, not a good place to to swim at all.
Poipu or Lydgate have a good areas for children.
I wouldn\'t plan a wedding there. Too hot, hard to get to, no real facilities.
Polihale is the perfect beach to just chill.

Hey guys!
I always wanted to go to Hawaii. I think the beaches are beautiful over ther! I'll get marry next may and we are thinking to spend our honeymoon there. But we are looking for a calm and beautiful place in Hawaii. Not many tourists and nice resorts. Does anyone have suggestions?

I am planning a trip to Hawaii with my handicapped daughter in a few months. She is in a power wheelchair. Is this a beach that she could access?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 18, 2007 7:28AM
I see ADA compliant access at some Kauai locations. Hanalei Bay, Anini, Poipu Beach Park all have areas where a power wheelchair would work.
Sep 30, 2007 1:52PM
Is this road too rough for a family of 6 driving a minivan? Don't mind the kids, worried about the minivan.
Oct 16, 2007 6:05AM
I lived on Oahu for years and have been to Maui, Kauai, and the big island. This beach is by far the most beautiful beach I have been to. It is very secluded and there are very few people ever present. The Na pali coast line begins there and is quite beautiful. Don\'t even attempt the trip without a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Once there it\'s well worth the drive.
Oct 19, 2007 5:23PM
My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai in November of 2001. We rented a Camaro and had no problem making the drive to Polihale several times. It was bumpy but we went slowly and never even bottomed out. We absolutely did not drive on the beach. We're going back to Kauai in April 2008 with our now 2 and 4 year olds. We can't wait to experience Polihale with them! It truly is a spiritual experience.
Nov 02, 2007 7:44AM
I haven't been to Kauai in 25-30 years, but plan to go with friends and husband December 6-13. What is the weather like during this time frame on Polihale as well as other beaches? Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 02, 2007 9:26AM
Hi Terri - in December you can find some calmer conditions on the South and East shores. The lighter winds frequently blow from the West or North. North or West winds mean offshore wind on South and East shores. Onshore wind = choppy seas. Offshore winds = smoother.
The surf in Winter also comes from the N. Pacific and affects the North and West shores.
Expect the ocean at Polihale to be dangerous. Unless you know what you are doing don't even go near the water when the surf is big. Walking on the beach and sunsets at Polihale are beautiful. WW

Hey, I'm a great surfer and im looking for the buggest waves where are those?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 02, 2007 7:11PM
Mike - the best waves are wherever the current swell is combining with the right winds. Some days are big, some are flat. The ocean is constantly changing (which most "great" surfers know). Be careful.

When my husband, daughter and I visited Kauai in May 2003, this was our last sightseeing spot before catching the plane home. My husband, an excellent amateur photographer, wanted to get an awesome western beach sunset before we left. We had bought this cute hula outfit for our 3 year old and he got some of the most awesome pix of her on the beach with the sun setting behind her...I wish I could post a picture! It ended up being quite an adventure trying to get the pix, bounce back out the dirt road and buzz up to Lihue without getting a ticket to catch our plane! ...But we made it and caught it all on video for laughs! We like a challenge!!
That said...even if you only drive out here to take some pictures and nothing else....you will be SOOO thankful when you're home remembering your awesome vacation! With all the high res digital cameras that we all have now...you will get some incredible shots to blow up and frame & brag to everyone that YOU were there and YOU are the awesome photographer!!
Dec 14, 2007 10:41AM
Please be very careful swimming at Polihale. My good friend died there six year ago. He was just swimming 30 feet out.
Don\'t go in over your knees, and even then be careful.
Walk down to Queen\'s pond to go for a swim.
Beautiful but deadly. Please be very careful!

Dec 14, 2007 11:13AM
True David - Polihale is beautiful but very dangerous. A number of beaches around Kauai are similar (Hanakapiai, Lumahai, Larsons and more). You cannot overcome the strength of the ocean and there is no help for miles. Be safe everyone and learn from David's sad story. W

I\'m here visiting Kauai for Christmas and one of the locals told me that my favorite beach Polihale is closed. Is there any truth to this? I certainly hope not as I\'m hoping to visit this week!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 25, 2007 8:47AM
Rebecca - unfortunately as far as we know Polihale IS closed. The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the access road to one of Kauai's most amazing beaches.
Dec 26, 2007 11:54AM
We are headed to Kauai next week with our two little ones, ages 3 and 2. We were planning to camp at Anini Beach but were recetnly told that it's really buggy (read: mosquitoes). Then we planned on Polihale, but if that's closed Im not sure where to camp. Any suggestions?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 26, 2007 12:12PM
Sarah - it has been very wet lately and Anini will be buggy. I would recommend YMCA camp Sloggett in Kokee or YMCA camp Naue in Haena. Both charge for camping but the experience is much better. W
Jan 01, 2008 9:32PM
In response to Sarah and the response from Kauai Explorer Staff.
I just drove to Polhale Beach Park today(Jan.1st/08) and the park was open. The gate was open and there were people camping there. Steady traffic on the dirt road coming and going, so Sarah you should go.
Jan 21, 2008 3:49PM
Is there a place to park near the end of the highway just before the dirt road begins?? From there is hiking to Polihale an option?? How many miles is it exactly?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 21, 2008 4:26PM
Michael - yes you can park at the gate (which has been open recently). Not sure exactly how far the hike would be. At least 3 miles.
Jan 25, 2008 12:29AM
Thank you for your response to my previous question regarding hiking to Polihale Beach. I have been examining the area on a satellite map and have come up with the following questions that would help me a great deal with my planning.
1) Is the entrance to Polihale State Park (by that I mean the point where you would park or enter the beach area by car) where Polihale Rd. actually ends, or is the entrance to the park before that point.
2) The location you indicate (at the gate) where one would be able to park there car before embarking on the dirt road; is that where Kiko Rd. meets Lower Saki Mana Road, or where Lower Saki Mana Road meets Polihale Rd.
3) Last of all, looking at the satellite map it would appear that once Polihale Rd turns so that it is running parallel to the ocean, if you were hiking as opposed to driving you would no longer have to follow the road to the park entrance, but could just cut over through the trees to the beach. Is this correct?
Thank you once again!
Jan 27, 2008 7:46AM
Drove out toward Polihale today and was disappointed to find the gate closed. Is there a reason this beach is closed? Are there specific days it is open? What gives?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 27, 2008 5:09PM
Aloha Valerie - that IS a bummer. Polihale is one of Kauai's amazing public places the current state of disrepair is a true shame.
The reason? Basically the State is not doing their job. If this was a private park like Limahuli or a golf course the place would be buffed out. There is no communication as to when the gate is open and when the facilities will be improved. Currently Polihale is closed without explanation and there is no running water. People are defecating and littering at will when the gate is open. Like I said, real bummer! W

Aloha Michael. Even many locals are unfamiliar with the specific names of the roads you are inquiring about. With such in depth questions, I recommend you contact the Kauai Visitor's Bureau for further information. Their toll free visitor information number is (800) 262-1400.
Also, we invite any other Explorer users to offer feedback to your questions. J
Jan 29, 2008 4:43AM
Probably the worst 5 miles of road you'll ever travel, but SO worth it. We went out there on Wednesday, Jan. 23, and were both in awe! Long, uncrowded beach, beautiful waves, sunny, and the echo of the waves off the cliffs behind the parking lot was amazing!
We're so glad the gate wasn't closed or we would have missed this!
Next time, we plan to take the video camera to hold on the dashboard of the car as we navigate the road! Will make a great vacation video!
Well worth the trip!

Visited Kauai in Mid-January. Took the plunge and made "the drive" to Polihale. I don't think you can call the road a "road." It was more like some hardened dirt, peppered with a variety of craters (some small, some huge). What you really need is some kind of lunar vehicle. Our top speed? Well, the needle stayed below 5 mph, let's put it that way. When we finally arrived, it was very windy and not real warm--certainly disappointing considering the drive. I guess the weather didn't help, but for us, it was certainly not worth it. Bummer. For the record, Ke'e beach and Poipu were fantastic, and much easier to access.
Jan 29, 2008 9:23PM
micheal,
the park is closed due to no water since sept. and the bad condition of the road
?-1. the park perimeter is vague.
there 3 places to easily got to beach.
first one to come to is the turn off for Queen's Pond.
left under the big Monkeypod tree.
second is fisherman's beach . the left about almost 2 miles from the pond turn
third is the road end up in the Day use area towards the end about another mile past Fisherman's turn off.
?-2 a gate where the the asphalt road ends.
it's a solid 5 mile hike from there to Queen's pond turn off
?-3
yep that's right.
the situation is up in the air right now.
park ranger are on patrol out there and may give you a ticket for being in the park right now

Jan 29, 2008 9:28PM
Thanks for your feedback, Matt. According to the Kauai District Office of the Parks Division Polihale is officially closed to the public until further notice. We have been told that potholes on the road need to be repaired and until the funding is approved and the work is done, the road to the beach will be closed. Once the repairs are done (they gave no estimate timeframe) the beach will be open for day use only. The only way to get updates on Polihale's status is to call the Kauai office at . J
Jan 30, 2008 7:48PM
Drove out to Polihale on the 28th. The gate was locked with a notice that the beach was closed. Was very disappointed since I consider it the best beach in Hawaii
Feb 04, 2008 5:07AM
Polihale is one of the best beaches on the island and the current closure is a disgrace. This does not seem to stop the locals (or the more persistent tourist) from going out there and in the last couple of weeks there has been plenty of traffic. In spite of the seriously unsafe ocean conditions it remains one of the best surfing spots and a good place to look for the elusive sunrise shell. While there is supposed to be no camping, and all the facilities are closed and without water, this does not seem to stop the people who want to stay out overnight. I would say the most important thing is for everyone to act responsibly. Trash in, trash out and take a little of what others have left behind so the state has less reason to keep the place locked up. The money it is going to take to repair the road is not likely to be forth coming and I am sure most of the locals would prefer the road be left the way it is anyhow.
Cynthia Fowler
Feb 11, 2008 4:33PM
Is Polihale still closed? We will be on Kauai the last 2 weeks of February. If so, can you suggest an alternative? I see Kekaha Beach but am uncertain how to find it from Hwy 50, but it seems to be a comparable choice.
Cynthia Fowler
Feb 11, 2008 4:37PM
If Polihale is closed and the locals are still going to the beach, where is the access road? I see there is a gate, but it is not locked. We will have a 4 wheel drive truck and would still like to go to the beach if possible.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 11, 2008 7:21PM
Aloha Cynthia. If you haven't already, you can read the statement issued from the DLNR about the road closure on our site's Polihale page. In the statement they recognize that locals are using 4 wheel drives to access the beach. Here's what DNLR says about the gate on 2/5/08: "A new gate was installed this week by the parks division where a rough four-wheel-drive road crosses state agricultural leased land to access the park near the back dune area. Although the gate will be left open at this time, it will be closed in the event of an emergency such as a tsunami warning."
They also go on to express safety concerns: "?We understand that people want to get to the beach and that some four-wheel-drive vehicles have been coming in on a rough side road through an adjacent state parcel,? Thielen said. ?We are concerned that people are putting themselves at risk because the condition of both roads inhibits the ability for emergency response vehicles to effectively respond if someone were to be injured in a surfing or fishing accident,? she said.
Good luck and contact DLNR for further updates. J

Feb 11, 2008 7:26PM
We have not received a statement indicating that the beach access has been reopened. You can check with DNLR for latest info. Kekaha Beach is accessible right from the highway but is not really comparable to Polihale, though it is a nice long stretch of beach. Part of Polihale's appeal is its remote locale and expansiveness. Though not similar, Salt Pond is a nice West side beach or try Mahaulepu on the South side for a more private experience. J
Feb 24, 2008 5:12PM
I'm visiting Kauai this week and am pleased to read on the DLNR website this morning that Polihale Beach has been reopened:
POLIHALE STATE PARK, KAUA?I REOPENS
2/08 - Polihale State Park is again open for day use. The water system has been repaired and the day-use area restrooms are open. Road repairs continue, and due to road conditions, 4WD vehicles are recommended to access the park. The park remains closed for camping pending completion of the road repairs.
This is my first time to the island so I'm glad I won't miss out on what should be the best beach.
Mar 10, 2008 3:25PM
Will be visiting kauai in late March. I am a little disapointed that almost everything I read seems to say that there are no safe beaches on the island. As I will certainly heed the warnings, I would like to know if there is anywhere safe to get in the water.
Mar 10, 2008 7:28PM
when beach camping in areas where there are no restrooms, is it recommended to potty like you would in the woods---dig hole and bury--or is there a locals way of removing bodily waste??

Aloha Marley. Since you're comment comes from the Polihale page perhaps you are wondering about the lack of restroom accessibility of this campground as of late. We're happy to say that the campground is now reopened, there is running water, permits are being issued and they've repainted the bathrooms.
Camping should only be done in permitted areas where facilities are available. The local way is to respect the land and use bathrooms. J

Aloha Mary Ann. Hopefully the warnings you've read have fostered a healthy sense of respect for the powerful ocean here on Kauai. As with anything, we cannot make a blanket statement and call any beach "safe" as conditions are constantly changing. However, there are many places where one can swim and enjoy the ocean. There are recommended swimming beaches such as Hanalei Bay, Lydgate Beach Park or Anini Beach. These still have potential to be dangerous on some days, so ask the lifeguard and use common sense.
A day like today, you'd have your pick of beaches of where to swim, as conditions are small and pleasant. Hope this helps. J

i noticed that per the dnlr notice the access road is now open. maybe less bumps now? we will be visiting in april, and as i have had recent rotator cuff surgery, i will be looking for all the photo & chill spots (and the easy/moderate hikes). and if we were to stay for the sunset, how is the drive out in the dark?
Mar 13, 2008 3:19AM
Really glad to hear that people have such a hard time getting to Polihale! Hopefully this continues to reduce mainstream tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the place. I really believe that the road there has been purposely neglected, or worse... Yet, it is no doubt the most breathtaking beach on the island. If your worthy, you'll make the trip and never regret it! But really...anyone know whats up with the Bees there? Still alive but washed up on the shore like they were out at sea or something. Kinda strange...

Mar 13, 2008 7:25PM
You'll see bees along the shoreline at most beaches. Heads up, because you can get stung if you step on them. J

Aloha Cyn. Haven't been on the road to Polihale since its repairs. Prior to that, the road was extremely bumpy and would not have been recommended for anyone recovering from sensitive surgery. For relaxing spots, I'd recommend Hanalei Bay or Mahaulepu, which aren't so out of the way. J

GOOD NEWS TO ALL!!!!
THE POLIHALE BEACH ACCESS ROAD IS NOW OPEN! CONDITIONS? IT'S LIKE A SUPER HIGHWAY! HOW DO I KNOW THAT? I'M THE GRADER OPERATOR THAT FIXED IT!!!!!!

Mahalo waialoha! We're making our first visit to Kauai from the 28th through April 5th staying in the Poipu area. I've been watching this thread & am happy to see your post.
Mar 24, 2008 12:25AM
We went to Polihale Beach and I felt the spiritual powers there myself...it wasn\'t until we got back from our trip that I did a little more research on it and found out why it felt so powerful. Rough ride, but worth it...just take your time, make sure you have plenty of gas, plenty of water and your sunscreen. We didn\'t stay long, but plan on going back to Kauai next year. Maybe we\'ll be brave enough to stay for the sunset. I just think it might be a little \"creepy\" driving back on that road in the dark...
OH AND MARY, I learned to swim in the summer of \'07 as an adult just so I could snorkel. I snorkeled at Anini for the first time and it was perfect. It was calm, warm and there were lots of fish. Take a look at this photo to see where I snorkeled at Anini. http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_angel322/2309566754/in/set-72157604005961592/
Kauai is a beautiful island and I treated it with a lot of respect. It was good to me, and I miss her so much.

Glad you enjoyed, Esther. A sunset at Polihale is definitely worth the drive back in the dark. Aloha. J

thanks waialoha for a job well done! beautification is part of keeping our island safe and beautiful for ALL to enjoy. God meant for us to appreciate the beauty that is His. mahalo for being a part of making that happen. Seeing the vast mountain coast, the ocean, the serenity, is worth the grumbles and stares some of the locals gave us for being there. My family loved the experience!
Apr 01, 2008 4:28AM
I too wiil be a honeymooner as of May 19th and am looking to maximize our beach time in Kauai while still leaving time for other adventure. After much research via this amazing website...it seems like polihale and tunnels will be ideal beaches to visit for spiritual and snorkeling purposes while hanalei sounds perfect for relaxation! Is this true (any other reccomendations would be great) and should we rent a 4WD vehicle (instead of a fun and sexy convertible) or unnec waste of fuel/cash? thanks & love the website!!!
Apr 02, 2008 7:10AM
We made an uneventful trip out to Polihale yesterday in our 2WD rental car (Sebring conv.) & had no problems. There was an area about a mile long with some nasty washboard road but we just stayed under 10 mph & had no problems with the road. The beach was one of the most incredible we've ever experienced anywhere. Just Do It!!!

Apr 03, 2008 6:02PM
Karen - Polihale, Makua and Hanalei are all amazing. Polihale is very dangerous for swimming and the snorkeling is not great (no reef = not much fish life).
I do not recommend renting a 4WD because all of the good spots are accessible via road or a short hike (which is part of the experience). There are not a lot of public areas to use 4WD on Kauai. W

Can anyone tell me if the fishing is good at Polihale? My son and I will be visiting Kauai in July and this beach looks perfect for whipping. Any thoughts?

I grew up on the Big Island but have never spent time on Kauai. My fiance and I will be honeymooning on Kauai in May and this looks like a perfect spot to camp. How do you get a permit, and do you tell them you are camping at Polihale or not, since it is sometimes closed? Do you think it will be open in May? Thank you!!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 16, 2008 7:20PM
Aloha Jessica. Though I haven't been out there since it reopened, the word is there have been improvements to the facilities (which are still very rudimentary) and the park is intended to remain open. For permit information go to: http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/camping/kauai.cfm and you can apply online. Remember that Polihale is very hot in the middle of the day. The ocean at this beach can be extremely dangerous, so use caution and common sense. An amazing place for a sunset! Enjoy! J

Are the driving conditions on the road to Polihale really greatly improved? I was there last summer and the road was in terrible shape. Fortunately I was driving a Chevy Trailblazer. I will be back on Kauai in June/ July and looking forward to
camping on the beach again.

nothing posted to this thread since 4-24-08!
Does that mean that there is no news or just that nobody has been to Polihale recently?
BTW, could somebody please post back with the phone number of a local tow truck operator who would be willing to come to Polihale ...just in case.
This was suggested by Justin but he posted back in December of 2006.
A great idea but I\'m wondering if anyone has had a need recently and who was it that they called and how much did it cost to get towed from the sand of the beach to the gravel of the main road?
Thanks.

My wife and I are coming for our delayed honeymoon/first anniversary. I want to take her to Polihale for a sunset, but is it safe to a) drive a rental car there with the improvements? b)drive along that \"road\" at night? and c)be on a secluded beach at night (ie. crime)? Also, can anyone recommend how to divide up 10 days to maximize time (ie. snorkeling, beach, cruise, kayaking, etc.) and which privately owned places to stay? Asking a lot but I would appreciate your help.
Thanks

We are visiting Kauai in late August to early Sep, and staying in Kekaha, therefore, we are quite close to Polihale. Now what is the real deal with the driving? I have read all the comments posted and 95% say that this is indeed a beautiful beach, especially closer to sunset. I will be renting a regular car not an SUV, so, is it okay to make that drive and just stay clear of the sand. Is this possible? or will a car have a hard time navigating this dirt road? Need Advice..Mahalo

Jul 03, 2008 8:09PM
Aloha Mark. Ask for specifics from the rental car companies about their Polihale policies. We've heard that some do not insure their cars for this trip (but its not been officially confirmed). We wouldn't advise driving the road at night if it's your first time just because it's not lit and there are no signs. There is camping at this beach, so being there at night would only require basic common sense, as with anywhere. Do be aware of 4x4 trucks that drive on the sand that may not see you in the dark.
As for your 10 day trip, putting yourself in the Kapaa or Lihue area could give you a central location from which to travel to the North & West shores on day trips, hitting the spots in between. Enjoy! J

Jul 03, 2008 8:21PM
Hi Wallace. The rules for a rental car on this road are determined by the specific rental car agency. We've only heard that some do not insure the vehicle if it makes this trip, but this is not the official word. Feel free to find out and post it here for future reference. The road can be traveled by a car, but be aware of soft sand once you get to the end. There are parking areas that you can stop at, if you are unsure. We do know it can be challenging and expensive to have to get a tow from this spot. J

I'm looking for a place to camp for a few nights- not necessarily all at the same place. This beach sounds like an amazing place to camp. Are there other beaches that you would recommend for camping? Also, are there other areas of the island that you would recommend for camping? We're just looking for somewhere that has beautiful scenery and is relatively safe.

Aloha Ryan. This question has been asked enough times we decided to write a guidebook with a whole section about it. You can check it out here:
https://kauaiexplorer.com/kauai_guide_books/
It describes all county and state parks that offer camping and links you to the sites that offer permits, plus maps and a whole lot more...
Polihale is a remote beach with rudimentary facilities for camping. It can be dangerous for swimming, so stay aware.

I will be staying on the North Shore for essentially 4 days in mid august. I would like to see as much of Kauai as possible. I am wondering in your opinion if driving to Polihale would be a practical use of my time. It sounds unlike any other beach in Hawaii but am concerned that it may take up to much time. My questions are, how long does it take to get there from Hanalei Bay (i\'d rather not do it if it\'s going to take almost a whole day)? Would you recommend this trip or would it be better use of time to spend exploring other parts of the island? Are there other nice beaches along the drive from the southern shore to western enhancing the drive? Would you recommend any other beaches on Kauai (or Maui) that are similar if I can\'t make it out to Polihale?
Thanks!

Jul 28, 2008 8:16PM
Hi Chris. A drive to Polihale from Hanalei will take up to 3 hours, depending on traffic. Starting very early will shorten the time. There are plenty of beaches along the way to visit as well - check out this website to see some highlights. There is no other beach like Polihale, but it is very remote and you should keep in mind it is extremely hot and dry in the middle of the day. Sunsets are epic. Another beautiful, remote beach in Poipu is Mahaulepu, which is an option if you don't decide to make the Polihale trek.
For further info about beach parks, etc. you can check out our new Ebook and help support this website:

My friend and I drove in a rental SUV (Subaru Forester) to Polihale in late July 2008 and it was well worth it. It is indeed a spectacular beach! It can be very hot in the afternoon. To those who have inquired, the road was not that bad. When we drove it, it was washboard rough. Any potholes were easily avoided. I would say that we averaged about 30 mph. It took about 35 minutes from Kekaha, less than we had expected. One can drive to the end without driving on the sand. We saw many Dodge sedans, which I suspect were by and large rental cars. Our rental agency -- Budget -- included a provision that there was no insurance coverage for anything that would have happened on the road.

Hi: We visited Polihale in the mid 1980's. We did not realize, you should not swim there. Guess, we lucked out. I love your web page. The beach is fantastic.
Aug 29, 2008 1:42PM
we made the drive yesterday Aug 28 at 5:30pm hoping to catch the sunset. The guidebooks say to take the right at the fork at the end of the road, which is kinda misleading....the end of the road means the end of highway 50, there is a fork...the left leads to PMRF and the right to polihale state park. The first dirt road on the left, TAKE THAT DIRT ROAD, drive about 4 miles to a big tree (monkeypod), at that point, make a right and follow about 2 miles and it will take you to the parking lot for polihale beach. The road is a definite dirt road but doable, YES, DOABLE. and the view is fantastic, unbelievable, breathtaking. There are no shaded areas, just a LOT OF SAND, and i mean LOTS. highly recommended for an unforgettable moment. We are definitely going back, next time, probably in the morning. Mahalo to your website!!!
Aug 30, 2008 6:01AM
We went back to Polihale this morning and decided to try the left dirt road from the monkeypod tree...NO NO NO!!! Only 4WD will make this part because the potholes are huge and as you go along, more and more sand gets mixed into the gravel, and when you reach the very small parking space, getting stuck is a definite possibility. We had to slowly reverse our way...scary moment.
Oct 18, 2008 10:29AM
I saw a reader ask if she should rent a 4 wheel drive.
I\'ll tell you why I rent one....They\'re roomy inside for changing your clothes after snorkeling.
Kauai is quite rural, and this \"changing room on wheels\" is very nice to have!
Also, there are many bad roads on Kauai, not just the road to Polihale. Also the frequent rains can make roads slick. 4WD\'s help.
The first (and only) time we went to Polihale we found it to be HOT and dry. There were crazies driving on the sand nearly running over sun bathers. We found it uncomfortable just to be there amongst that.
We\'ll be coming back in November. Maybe we\'ll give the beach another chance.
Aloha
Nov 10, 2008 7:29PM
We are headed back to Kauai for the 6th time next month and Polihale is high on our must see/do list! Best experience was Christmas Day one year. Wonderful spot! We've driven to it in rental cars, anything from a Taurus to a minivan. The road is rough and you need to drive more slowly than you have since driver's ed-but it's doable. Just know that you may be violating the terms of your rental contract when you head out there. However, we've never had a problem getting there and back to the hard surface road. I do suggest leaving the beach driving to the locals. This is a popular beach with locals, especially on weekends. And it's a beach to watch the waves, not swim, unless you know the risks you're taking.
Nov 10, 2008 11:57PM
hawaiian style, live it; or leave!
Nov 18, 2008 4:30PM
Aloha,
My daughter and I camped here about 8 years ago.We did not have any problems. At the time restrooms and a cold water shower were available.
A local couple spent a few days camping with us they were \"fishing\" for opi and lobster for their wedding reception.
A family from England was camping there as well.
You can bring some matchlight and ahi to grill on the bbq.For dinner at sunset than spend the night camping so you don\'t have to drive back in the dark.
You will need a camping permit. I think we got ours in Lihue?
Bring lots of drinking water and sunscreen. It is remote.
Polihale is well worth the drive.I\'ve found that some of the most beautiful places are hard to get to in Hawaii.
If you can handle adventure and some discomfort you will be rewarded!!!!

Aloha,
What an awesome beach. We are home now but it was a great place to see a sunset. The water was great if you are careful. Don't get caught with your back to the water, there are consequences. The road is extremely bumpy but definitely doable in any type of car. If you get a chance it is worth seeing. In Koloa there is a souvenir shop POHAKU T's that has only Kauai made accessories. They sell a women's t-shirt that quotes a sying that used to be on the pavillion at Polihale, "Never forget you are as beautiful as Kauai", Awesome. We hav a great 30th Anniversary and were very sad to leave Kauai. We are also very hopeful to make it back again some day.

For Immediate Release: December 15, 2008
POLIHALE STATE PARK, KAUA'I IMPACTED BY WEEKEND FLOODING
LIHU?E -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is warning the public that
heavy rains have caused the access road to Polihale State Park to be flooded and impassable to
vehicles. A sign has been posted at the start of the park access road to warn of hazardous
conditions.
Heavy rains since last week and over the weekend also caused damage to the five-mile-long
unimproved dirt access road.
State Park officials believe it may take two to three weeks for the road to dry out sufficiently for
road repairs to begin.
The campground is closed and campers with permits are being called and informed of the road's
condition. Permit fees can either be refunded or an alternative date provided. No new camping
permits will be issued until further notice.
?We ask for the public?s patience and cooperation during this closure,? said Laura H. Thielen,
DLNR chairperson. ?It is necessary to allow the park road to dry out before we can make any
needed repairs. Last year, continued use of the road before it dried caused the condition of the
road to further deteriorate, and delayed the reopening of the park,? she said.
DLNR will continue to provide the community, including the Garden Island and Kaua?i Visitors
Bureau, with updates on the road closure and status of repairs. The department will also
continue to post status updates on the State Parks? website at http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/ .
?We understand that people want to get to the beach and that some four-wheel-drive vehicles
have been coming in on a rough side road through an adjacent state parcel,? Thielen said.
Page 2
?We are concerned that people are putting themselves at risk because the condition of both roads
inhibits the ability for emergency response vehicles to effectively respond if someone were to be
injured in a surfing or fishing accident,? she said.

Feb 10, 2009 4:12AM
Aloha-
We have an opportunity to travel to Kauai next year, this being our second time to the Islands, but our first to Kauai. I have a couple of ?\'s maybe you can answer:
When Polihale is opened, about how long a drive is it from the resort areas in the south (Poipu) or even farther east like in Wailua?
Is parking allowed on the beach? Might seem like a trival question but where I live you can drive to the beach, park on it, and setup for the day next to your vehicle.
As far as surfing goes, is the beach at the northern end more susceptible to rips and stronger currents do to its proximity to the Na Pali coast? How empty (or not) is the lineup in winter? I have many seasons experience (almost 30) surfing in \'cane surf, but obviously this is a different beast and is not something I would want to approach completely alone. Then again, I don\'t really want to seek out the crowds of Hanalei either.
By the way, I would recommend to everyone that reads and reviews these comments to \"give to the cause\" and buy the Explorer\'s Guide to Kauai.
Thanks for your time.

Aloha OC and thanks for the plug. Looks like Polihale will be closed until Summer. When it reopens the drive is about 1.5 hours from Poipu. People drive on the beach but it is actually illegal. Better to park in the shade. We surf at a spot called Queens Pond and various sandbars. The waves at Polihale are powerful with lots of current, even by Hawaiian standards and usually not too crowded (def not like Hanalei). W

Hi Anini - the best connect between Kalalau and Polihale is over the top via Kokee. No trail exists currently and I doubt the DLNR will ever allow one. In summer Paddling is the best way to connect. W
Mar 07, 2009 7:42AM
From the pictures that are posted, the road doesn\'t really look all that different than it did after the storms in March 2006. The beach/road was open then. What is different now?
Is the road and or beach actually gated off?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 08, 2009 3:27AM
Hi Jeremy - as far as we know the gate is there and you'll get a ticket if a DLNR officer catches you trying to access Polihale. There is damage to the road and facilities. The DLNR has little motivation to make it happen quickly, citing budget shortfalls. Pretty lame. W
Mar 13, 2009 12:38AM
Our two families made the slow trek to Polihale the first week in August 2007. It instantly became a favorite, both the beach and the trek there. Polihale that day was like a lake, with very small waves lapping gently at the edge of the deserted beach. Do calm waters like that indicate safety -- that young children can safely go in? This is regarding the wide sandy, not rocky, areas. Are there unseen undercurrents we need to be aware of? We all had a wonderful day in the water, but I'm thinking we may all have walked right past a no-swimming sign.

Rip currents and other hazards are easily recognized by experienced eyes but to others these same hazards might be completely missed. So, unless you are very confident in your skills or talk to locals / lifeguards it's best to err towards caution. W

What happened to Hawaii State Law that requires public access to all Beaches. Surely, running a grader over a 4 mile cane road can't be that expensive. The facilities in this park, ie restrooms have been "horrific" for many, many years. The dangers of the ocean have to be the responsibility of those that enter, as on any beach in the world. The DLNR is simply hording one of the most scenic beaches in the World.

Hi PM - you express one of the many frustrations with management of our public, taxpayer funded resources and programs. If Polihale or Kee were a private business they would either be fixed or out of business. Seems like the programs funded by taxes have largely forgotten how to work and who they work for.

ALL OUT FOR POLIHALE!!!
Help Open Our Park! Clean Up the Access Road!
Sierra Club and Surfrider Foundation Road Clean Up
Saturday April 11
3 PM to 6 PM
Huge mahalo to Bruce Pleas for organizing the road restoration!
Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 3-6 pm. Polihale State Park and road trash (opala) clean up. Community is invited to clean up Polihale State Park and access road prior to opening. State Parks will supply the bags and pick up the bags of trash. The objective is to pick up as much trash as possible so the Park is in pristine condition when it opens. Please leave all natural items alone (wood, animals, flowers, etc.) Bring your own water, sunscreen and sun protection. Attire is up to you with the energetic cleaners needing to wear kiawe protection (shoes, long pants, arm protection and a tool that will help reach into the kiawe). This will be the first group of community members allowed into this area since the December 14 rain.
Entrance to this event will be at the Polihale State Park gate. A release form will be required to be filled out and signed before passing thru the gate and a check out will also be required as you leave. The bathrooms will be available for the volunteers. The restrictions for this event will be no beach access (clean up road and Park only). Please bring any camera's or video equipment to document the work done by the volunteers, the wildlife that is living in the area and the forces of nature that closed the Park.
Volunteer check in and check out people along with area monitors will be needed with these volunteers being able to access the Park early to view the work done and enjoy the solitude of being alone at Polihale.
View the work done at Polihale at http://www.flickr.com/photos/28305556@N06/
Please do not bring surfboards, fishing stuff, etc. The Beach will still be closed.

My wife and I will be arriving to Kauai on April 16th for our first visit to Hawaii. Would you please tell us, what is up with Polihale? I read that they had a big cleanup event last weekend to prepare for reopening this week. Are the roads open? Also, we have a couple of unrelated questions: 1) Are there still whale sightings or have they begun their migration? 2) When interpreting the ocean reports, how small should the North shore waves be to safely snorkel at Tunnels? For instance, today I see waves of 3 to 5 feet. I am guessing that 5 foot waves would cross the reef and make snorkling risky. But what about 2 feet? 3 feet? At what height are they mostly absorbed by the outer reef? Mahalo! Great website!

Hi Jeff - the Polihale cleanup happened last weekend but the park is not open yet. Government moves slowly.
For your other questions... Yes there are still whales here but not for (most will be gone by May). For the Ocean Report we only recommend swimming locations if the conditions are safe. If Haena is not listed under the recommended lifeguared beaches, then it's too rough. W

DLNR TO REOPEN POLIHALE STATE PARK ON SATURDAY
Volunteer energy helps State get the job done
LIHU?E -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will reopen the access road
to Polihale State Park, on Kaua?i?s west side, tomorrow Saturday, April 25 at 8 a.m. A brief
reopening ceremony is planned.
State Parks personnel and community volunteers anxiously monitoring weather conditions
during last night?s flash flood watch were in agreement that the park?s reopening could happen if
the west side was spared. Fortunately the weather cooperated and the park road is ready to be
opened. Camping permits for Polihale will again be issued starting Monday April 27.
Reopening of this popular beach park has been long awaited by island residents and visitors, and
was made possible thanks to the energetic efforts of Kaua?i community volunteers who pitched
in to help the State make needed repairs to extensive damage caused by flooding in December.
In March, a small army of volunteer workers stepped up to provide skilled labor, equipment and
materials to fix damage to the road and portions of the park?s water system after it was closed in
its entirety due to severe storm damage almost four months ago.
?We want to thank the people of Kaua?i, the large number of volunteer crew members, and
others who provided monetary or food donations for the workers, for their phenomenal and
good-spirited efforts for the good of the community. Due to their love for this beach park,
community members devoted themselves to accomplish those repair tasks necessary to allow us
to safely re-open as much of the park as possible,? said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.
Page 2
Parks staff have not yet estimated the actual value of the volunteers? efforts but it could be worth
near $200,000. The last time the road to Polihale State Park was graded it cost the state $90,000.
Work on repairs to storm damage began in earnest on March 23, 2009. Volunteers had to wait
out rainy weather and a missile launch from neighboring Barking Sands base before they could
get started.
?The volunteers had to bring in water for making concrete. They brought in generators to power
the welders. They brought in excavators, cranes, bobcats, cement mixers, dump trucks, graders,
and other equipment,? said Thielen. ?They even turned out to remove bulky trash and overgrown
vegetation.?
?Most important, they brought in an extremely strong sense of purpose and aloha, which even
gained national media attention. The community members personally, collectively, and
unselfishly worked together towards the common purpose of re-opening the park. Local
restaurants, markets, and individuals even donated lunches to the workers,? she said.
One of the biggest challenges was the condition of the first bridge, which, however was found to
have sound footings after all the debris was removed and the area cleared. After repairs and
improvements the bridge was inspected and declared safe for vehicles to cross.
Work tasks completed by volunteer crews included:
Bridge repair and improvements: welding surface pieces in place, pouring concrete access
segments, installation of vehicle barrier rails, clearing accumulated debris below to re-establish
ability for natural flow under the bridge, and adding structural supports.
Repair of four roadway washouts: tasks include grading four miles of roadway, and portions
covered in silt run-off or scoured out, repair of the road accessing the park water well and pump,
repair of the broken water line to four comfort stations, and blocking off vehicle access to the
fifth comfort station that was severely damaged by the December 11, 2008 rain storm. The fifth
comfort station is located at the far Napali end of the park and is not slated to be made
operational at this time.
Other tasks completed by Parks staff before reopening included: clearing of drainage culverts,
cleaning comfort stations, adding safety and information signage, installation of rock barriers to
prevent vehicles from driving into culverts at the approaches to the two bridges, and installation
of road edge markers at two drainage spots where washouts were repaired.
Polihale State Park sustained considerable damage due to the Dec. 11 rain storm. The five-mile
long unimproved road was unsafe to drive due to very large washouts, mud and rocks on the
road, culverts filled with silt and debris. The park was flooded and the water line to the park
comfort stations was broken, the road to the park?s water well and pump was damaged, another
comfort station was left structurally unsound and its individual waste water system was
destroyed.
Page 3
DLNR Division of State Parks did not have the funds available immediately after the storm to
make emergency repairs to the park road and facilities, which were estimated in the several
millions of dollars. Due to the state?s projected $2 billion revenue shortfall and decreases to the
DLNR budget, it was not known when funds would be available to make repairs to reopen the
road and park. The infusion of community volunteer energy made it possible for the park to be
reopened sooner.
# # #
News in brief: The Department of Land and Natural Resources will reopen Polihale State Park
at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. A team of community volunteers worked with State Parks staff
to repair the access road and park areas after it was damaged by flooding in December. Camping
permits for Polihale will again be issued starting Monday April 27.

just went out to polihale today... road was in great shape, not surprising due to all the work the volunteers put into getting it reopened. had no issue with 2wd, there were no potholes or such. there were some rough areas that had been filled with small rocks to even out the surface, and those were the only spots you had to go slow. otherwise, i was averaging about 25mph and it only took about 10 minutes to get to the end of the road. to any volunteers reading this - thanks for all your efforts in getting polihale reopened!

My wife and I went out there in our Solara convertable, rough but no problem. Got there about 15 minutes before sunset and found a couple had gone into the sand a little too far and stuck their PT Cruiser. While my wife enjoyed the sunset I helped them get unstuck and we were out to Highway 50 before it got too dark. They spent the night but didn't have to worry about getting out in the morning. Next time we go will be earlier in the day to enjoy the beach.

Thank you for all of the information on this site!! Are there places along the way from Lihue where you can rent a tent for camping? Can you obtain a permit to camp at Polihale in-person at the Lihue office for same-day use? In the current road condition, could an economy Aveo -type make the trip? Do the bathrooms have flushing toilets? Mahalo!!!

This was one of the most beautiful beaches we visited. We did NOT swim because it looked fairly dangerous - there were some people swimming, but mostly people hanging out and having picnics. You have to drive a 5-mile dirt road to get here - we had 4-wheel drive so no problem, but you would probably have to be cautious in a car. You can drive on the sand in Kauai, but we were scared of getting stuck, so we didn\'t.

Many thanks to all the people that worked to reopen Polihale Beach, my husband and I have been going to Kauai since 1988, it is our most favorite spot on Kauai and we have spent many hours on that beach. Many Mahalos and Alohas to the wonderful people for all their efforts. It wouldn\'t seem right to not visit our favorite beach in the world on our next trip. That is one of the reasons why we fell in love with the Island and it\'s spirit, aloha and love.

Hi. Just wondering about the shape of the road to Polihale since the "big rainstorm" last month. Did it affect the road?

Polihale road is open at this time. The rain mostly affected North and East shores.
Aug 03, 2009 2:02PM
Reading through the years of comments, I see two things:
- Sunsets are amazing
- The roads are tricky
I consider myself to be a good driver, I'll have a Jeep. If I stay for the sunset will I have trouble navigating my way out of the beach in the dark? Or is the road marked well enough (or straight enough) that it shouldn't be a problem? I almost expect a line of cars leaving at the same time.

I will have a 2wd suv in October, how hard is the drive? Also, How far of a walk is it from the end of the dirt road to the end of the beach?
Sep 21, 2009 5:04AM
we've been to kauai 4 times now, and polihale is our favorite beach. we took our 4 kids in 2001 and spent 2 full days there, when our youngest was almost 2, and our oldest 10. the kids loved it, and while we did watch our kids very closely in the water, never felt they were in danger. however, i have noticed a strong rip current closer to barking sands, and so have always stayed closer to the napali coast. waves are typically 2-5 ft, nice for boogie boarding and a little body surfing. the drive is long -- you need to go slow. we;re heading back to kauai next week, and are planning to hit polihale 2 or 3 times. it is, by far, the best beach on the island.

I dont understand why this area is so hard to get to? Locals dont want all us tourists out there? arnt we the driving force of your economy? How exspensive could it possibly be to run a grader in and back out? I would be willing to bet that there are some local companies who would do it for free, how about the rental car companies? I'll bet they would save thousands with a small investment of having the road graded! Its hard to see one of kauai's greatest resourses miss managed. Personally I wouldent have a problem stopping at the entrance and paying a small fee to drive down a graded gravel rd. Peace out Kauai
Nov 07, 2009 12:36AM
We went there a couple of years ago. We live in the desert and so we thought we knew the sand. It's different sand ! Very soft and fine and we got stuck, in spite of a 4WD. A couple of locals pulled us out, no need to call a tow truck. Don't call the car company - deal with it and then turn in the car if you have trouble. We got in trouble because we got off the road a bit otherwise we would have been fine. I would never recommend driving on the beach even if it were not illegal, which I understand that it is.
It was an adventure but worth every second. The stars are brighter and bigger than anywhere I've ever seen. If you stay late take bug spray.
For me, it's a very spiritual place and we really enjoyed that it is out of the way and not crowded. The sun is great, the surf makes it not suitable for much swimming, not a kiddie swimming beach at all but I have taken my 3 young kids (another time) and we had a great time.
Take water, snacks and even meals (like any back-country trip) along with first aid, etc. It's an adventurous drive but one I absolutely recommend !

Hi Gary - simply put, you are right. It would not be that hard to maintain Polihale and a number of other great parks on Kauai. Unfortunately most of the funding goes to administration and inefficient labor. True dat.
Nov 12, 2009 8:00PM
Re Polihale: be VERY careful bodysurfing because while I was doing so, hit my head against the beach after being tossed around and suffered neck injuries - temporarily lost feeling in arm but it came back right away. Suffered some ligament and nerve damaged (pretty well ticked them off!). On the mend and feeling like an idiot, I'll be going back to Polihale because it's just that nice of a beach.
Nov 26, 2009 2:15PM
I have visited all of the islands in Hawaii several times but Kauai is by far my favorite.
The entire Kauai island is beautiful but I am drawn to the south & west parts of the island because of it\'s diversity of accessable mountains and uncrowded beautiful beaches with the friendly laidback locals non touristy attitude.
Polihale is too spectacular to not have better access for the public, locals & tourist, and I ask this question.
Has the Kauai county or state government officials not applied for a federal grant for improvements at Polihale from the Obama Stimulus Funds?
Every mainland state has receive federal grants from Stimulus Funds that are not required to be paid back for idenical improvement projects.
My home state of Arkansas has received these federal grants for improvements in state & local parks that are far less needed here than Polihale\'s needs.
Locally we are actually tearing up perfectly good access roads & park facilities just to have a place to spend these grant funds which most local taxpayers think is rediculous.
Our Nations current economic conditions that generated the federal stimulus funds could be the answer to Polihale\'s lack of funds for improvements if Kauai\'s government officials are pressured to apply for these free funds provided they have not already done so.
It wouldn\'t hurt to ask!

Yes - there is only one road.
Dec 10, 2009 5:00PM
ok folks, I lived on Kaua'i in Kalaheo and Hanapepe, and when I was too poor to live there, I literally lived at Polihale. I drove a 500 dollar Buick Century out there, and I used to drive that stretch in 10 minutes top out to the parking lot. Its really not as bad as everyone thinks (road condition wise) I used to go there daily. Only time its gets dicey is if you go after heavy rains, or if you're being a dumb haole tourist and you drive your two wheel drive car into soft sand (trust me it happened like every single time i went out there...)
So be smart, and go enjoy it. The most spiritually enlightening place for me on the whole entire island... sigh.
If you visit Kaua'i, you must visit Polihale. But if you're disrespectful, you pau. Night Marchers, they don't like that. You pick up your trash, be respectful of ALL life, if you dive for fish, you betta eat it all, don't waste, watch your children if you take them, LISTEN to the LOCALS about the tide, if they aren't in the water, you don't go in the water... There are portugese manowar (jellyfish) that are small but can be deadly, especially to children, there are sharks (Mano) out deep, dolphins (Nia'i), and tortoises (Honu)
these are all beings you need to respect. The biggest thing tourist need to know about visiting anyplace that is local, is to listen, to learn, and to be respectful.
Also, the tides/current, they are strong sometimes, and not so strong others, depending on the time of year or weather patterns. Be cautious.
Take pictures, you will want to remember your visit forever.
Have fun, be safe, and God Bless
Kymlee
**also, like someone said earlier, watch out for the keawe (pronouced Kee Avv ehh) its a very large thorn which will go through your feet if not protected... even the cheap foam slippas (flip flops) the thorn will go thru. So wear good ones.

I went to Polihale beach in June of 2008 and was aware of the road. I was driving a chevy convertible. I am very familiar with driving on snowy, icy and fluffy snow and this road reminded me of driving in deep snow. I took my time, maneuvered around the potholes and kept my foot on the gas in the sandy areas, don\'t stop, as you may get stuck. It was a long trip but like everyone else has said it was well worth it when I got there. Only about 6 people there in total, AWESOME! Definitely will return again.

I hope future o ka aina generations fight to keep the rest of da Sandwhich Isles from becoming like so many places in my home town, Kailua and Lanikai on Oahu. It used to be unreal back in da hanabata days when ICE wasn\'t around and buku folks hadn\'nt sold out to foreign investers waving impressive amounts of cash around. I talked to an old friend who still lives right next to Lanikai Park in Kailua a year ago-what he described shocked me. He said that there are litteral \"trains of tourist buses unloading Japanese tourists\" into this quiet little, one lane-one way loop neighborhood Lanikai. The result was completely flustered local residents, a beach with litter and \"sand that was like a giant ash tray with all the cigarette butts\", quoted verbatim. How sad. I used to spend alot of time out at the Mokuluas offshore Lanikai-shucking ourselves off \"the bush\"-a tiny knob of rock adjacent to a wind-beaten bush, 100 feet up in the cove behind the twin hump island, surfing every peak outside the reefs adjacent to both island and in between, from flat island to \"no can tells\" outside Waimanalo.
I hope we-those of us who know and can-spread the word at sites like this one to people who are venturing to Polihale and other memory making places, to treat kindly what it is around you, whether it be the land or other travelers or the local residents-those born and raised. I sure wish to duplicate or one up the incredible sessions I\'ve had there, getting shacked till I was silly in empty sandbar dream barrels and snagging 15 lb Ulua, spinning right off the beach with tripple, tripple prong hooks on a Dillinger lure, 25lb test. Talk about ono kine grinds after surf da okole off all day!!? Fish for 20 minutes, tops, catch one fish...pau. Then 45 minutes later, your taste buds \"stay all bust up,hamajang, kukai. It truely is a magical place, like Kalalau and Kalaupapa.
I ka pono o ka aina, do the right thing and mahalo,

My husband and I spent 16 days on Kauai in October 2008; the last three of which we camped on Polihale beach. It was magnificent! We joke that it was "purgatory," because it was SO HOT and we couldn't get in the ocean! We actually took cold showers during the day to cool off while at the beach. The ocean was incredibly strong; we saw a couple of young boys get sucked out in the current in a matter of a split second (luckily someone was smart enough to grab a boogie board to go after them), and even being a strong adult in water to your knees can suck you in. Be careful of the thorns as they are super strong and sharp (I?m still finding them in my thong sandals!). We stayed on the North Shore but spent time exploring, hiking, and snorkeling all over the island, and it?s amazing how the north end of the Na Pali coast differs from the south end (we also hiked the Kalalau trail). We rented a jeep, which seems the way to go. What an amazing place to visit!

When you go to Polihale, please take extra garbage bags with you. I was there a month ago and the litter on the sand brought tears to my eyes and ripped my heart out. I hauled out as much as I could carry. What a sad sad sad thing to happen to such of a beautiful place. I remember back when it was pristine. Now people think it is an ash tray and the public dump. Please haul out your garbage and kokua and haul out other people\'s garbage too, because someone must care.

The road is bumpy, but, if you take your time, and use common sense, you won\'t have any issues.. even in a small front wheel drive car. You don\'t have to drive on the sand to get to the beach. You can park, and walk 100 yards to the beach. This is worth the trip.. trust me!

I will be in Kauai with my husband on my honeymoon in a few weeks. We are both crazy about the earth\'s most natural, preserved beauty. After reading this wonderful site, my excitement is at an all-time high and I just can\'t wait for us to experience your beautiful island! We are going to be adventurous and make the drive out to Polihale. After reading everything that was posted here, I just have to extend a very warm MAHALO and THANK YOU to all of the volunteers that put their sweat and energy into making this park accessible again. We will be sure to take care of and appreciate all that we encounter on your beautiful island! And I will be sure to write here again after my trip!

Okay, must admit I'm a little bit confused. Some people seem to be going all the way to the edge of the Na Pali cliffs, others not. We will be there in July, and want to go only as far as Queen's bath to watch the sun go down and do a little stargazing. Is the road the Ultimate Guide describes to the huge monkeypod tree and Queen's Bath doable (though we may have to go slow and easy) in an "economy car"? Is the road marked and fairly easy to follow? Posters talk about sunset - is the locked gate at sunset before Queen's Bath, or after?

Jeff - Queens bath is the notoriously dangerous spot on the cliffs at Princeville. Queens POND is at Polihale - it's a surf spot with super-strong currents only for advanced water-people.
Jun 17, 2010 12:17AM
Im surprised i havent heard more of this.how is it trying to get out in the darkness? Seems if your staying for sunset, then im sure dark makes it more difficult?
Anyway i had an overall Kauai question. If we rent a Jeep 4WD, is there anything more we will see, than a normal car would make u walk? I am not a off road specialist, but i would like the hair to blow in the wind, and just be free...is it worth the pay of the rental? Were going in the first week in September if that helps. Thank you.
Jun 17, 2010 3:39AM
Ah yes, I meant Queens POND. Sorry. Not looking to swim at Polihale, just to go for the sunset and stargazing so, is the road the Ultimate Guide describes to the huge monkeypod tree and Queen's Pond doable (though we may have to go slow and easy) in an "economy car"? Is the road marked and fairly easy to follow? Posters talk about sunset - is the locked gate at sunset before Queen's Pond, or after? In other words, if we are looking for the above activities would we have to be campers?

Hey all,
Three questions:
1. Are there any roadsigns that leads you to Polihale beach
2. Pacific Missile Range Storage facility, does someone have a idea for what they use this
3. Pacific Missile Range viewpoint, does someone know good viewspots?
I hope someone can help me out
Sorry for my English

I have been to the beach in a Jeep Wrangler. We were amazed and are planning on possibly camping there one night on our next trip in November. My only concern is being out there so remote at night. Has anyone ever heard of any crime at the beach?

We went to Polihale Beach last December and were blown away (figuratively) at the beauty. It\'s the most amazing beach I\'ve ever seen. This will be as MUST see on our next trip to Kauai this coming December. I must say I\'m a bit surprised at some of the comments about the dirt road. We drove a mini-van about 30 mph for the entire 5+/- miles and found it to be no problem. Just a dirt road like any other dirt road you might encounter on the mainland. Maybe we caught it on a good day! I\'ll risk voiding any rental car warranty to see this beach!
Aug 19, 2010 9:14PM
We will be on Kauai again late September 2010 and ask whether we must rent a 4wd Jeep to get to Polihale for the afternoon and sunset. Would a Mustang be all right a month from now?
Aug 28, 2010 8:55PM
I have arrangements and permits to kayak the napali with a group of 4, and we are currently trying to figure out logistics for a car shuttle from the West side up back up to Haena.
I am local, and recognize that parking in Hawaii is always a sketchy proposition, but does anyone know of a relatively safe place to leave a car for the weekend near Polihale? We do not mind paddling a bit farther, and I do not mind a 5-6 mile jog to fetch the car when we come out.
Thanks and Aloha!

Aloha Jack & Vera-We went to Polihale the last week of August 2010 and July 2008 and had no problems accessing the road and the beach. We drove a Subaru AWD that was a rental in August and a larger Chrysler in '08. Of course, there was a lot of flooding in 2009 and the road was closed, worked on, and reopened. There are very smooth parts and very rutted parts that you need to use caution. We saw all types of cars driven on the road from very small rental compacts to large local 4WD's. Some people were driving very slowly like us and some were driving their rentals ridiculously fast. You could drive the Mustang just go slow. You don't want to bottom out and rip something off the car or dent an oil pan, etc. Be careful of large sand piles that you do not get suck in them as you get close to the beach area. If in doubt stop, park, and walk to the beach. If you go in any rainy seasons although it is very dry in Polihale area you must watch the streams that flow near the road. There are two small bridges that you must cross that go over streams on the road. The signs say the road is 4.6 miles, but I think it is a little longer. Leave enough time to spend part of the day there and watch the sunset. It is breathtaking. You will love it. Know where you parked because it gets dark fast. You may want to have a flashlight with you. It is mostly a local beach and everyone we've met was very friendly and informative. Polihale is a very spiritual place in the Hawaiian cosmology so please carry out all trash, etc.

Thank you, Catskilliana! We are very much re-assured and will indeed drive the Mustang slowly and carefully. Many thanks,
Jack & Vera

Aloha,
We are thinking of camping @ Polihale in early October, but would be arriving late in the evening, likely after dark. How difficult is it to navigate the roads & set up camp in the dark? Is overnight camping relatively safe here?
Thanks!

If you've never been out there I would not recommend arriving at night.

One more day on the Island and plan on going to PoliHale tomorrow, the postings have been a tremendous help. Is it open tomorrow to spend the day?
Dec 15, 2010 3:00AM
I am planning on camping for one week in February.
Will it be possible? How does one week sound?
Would it be too much?
Dec 26, 2010 7:35PM
Yes - wonderfull beach - drive slow and carefully and it should be no problem (had a 4wd). I am a quite good swimmer and have to admit, it's tough here. Nevertheless - njoy the location. For sure not "the most wonderfull" beach but one of... (have you ever been to german northcoast/ Sylt or to the beaches close to Capetown?).
we love to be here - although no seals seen yet...

this website has been so helpful,I lived on Kauai and went to Kapaa High, and now come back to visit frequently.Even though I know the island well,I still have learned so much, thanks!Looking forward to my Feb visit, this year we'll be there for my birthday! Is Polihale a hike? And hoew is it in early Feb?
Feb 01, 2011 2:33PM
I've been to Kauai on vacation 3 times and each time we camped for at least 10 days. (and will be going to camp again in a few months.)
Polihale is the best place. Sunsets are incredible. Personally I love the very loud sound of the distant ocean with the wind. The view of the Na Pali coast from here is one of the most photographed and painted scenes from the island. But in person, its a whole different experience.
DO NOT GO IF YOU HATE THE FOLLOWING:
- Super hot sand that will burn your feet during the day.
- From where you would most likely park you car, you have to walk a bit to get to the water.
- Windy conditions
- Super Strong Currents. DO NOT GO INTO THE WATER UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO. Me and a friend have almost been swept out. BEWARE! But, if you can take it, it can be fun for a quick, close to shore dip.
- On weekends, quite a few locals come in and party. Might not be your thing. (We just have our own party)
- The bathrooms, showers, Pavilions, and roads are crap. But, if your camping, even having one of these things is super awesome! (I showered every day on my last trip. The beach showers around the island give you that option)
Also, be careful where you camp. If you tuck yourself between some dunes, sometimes people that are driving the beach won\'t see you until its too late. Make yourself at least somewhat visible.
Polihale is in really rough shape. They actually had the road wash out during a major rain storm a couple of years ago. The road had to be put back together by the locals because the GOV\'t didn\'t have the money.
So I think the locals appreciate its beauty. And if the road is rough (Even cars and SUV\'s turn around within the first 1/4 mile. Don\'t want to mess up the rental.) Also, no tour buses go out there which lets be honest, piss everyone off. (Same reason they don\'t put in bigger bridges on the north side...keep the buses OUT!! That type of traffic will ruin this paradise.
Feb 02, 2011 3:57PM
Anybody know how the road to here is now
Feb 17, 2011 10:54PM
can i just park and hike in before the dirt road?
Feb 28, 2011 5:44PM
I plan to visit Polihale in 2 weeks and want to watch the sunset. However, I will not be camping over night. Is it safe to drive out of Polihale after sunset? I saw a post saying not to drive there at night. Thanks.

Elizabeth - the road to Polihale is REALLY rough right now. If it rains, it's 4WD only. West side has been getting a lot of rain this winter.
Mar 06, 2011 7:44PM
My young daughter (now 7) "arrived" on Polihale Beach during an epic and gorgeous stay on Kauai. You could say it was a life-changing experience for her. It is truly a wonderful beach and I can't wait to take her back one day. Please respect this treasure everybody!
Mar 12, 2011 4:37AM
Do this!!!
Just got back March 2011.
Yes, the road had some heinous ruts & craters. Did we bottom out the convertible once or twice or...yep.(will get the jeep or other AWD next time) But, it\'s passable.
The Na Pali coast to the right, Ni\'ihau Island off to the left....It\'s worth the huge flawless beach and sunset alone.

Are campfires permitted in this park?... And which parks that have beaches do permit camp fires? (Real camp fires; not grill fires)...
Thanks. :)

Apr 16, 2011 5:07PM
Camp fires are not allowed - unless you are cooking with the fire. So there is a loophole just get your marshmallows ready.
Apr 17, 2011 8:55AM
AWESOME. Thanks!
Apr 20, 2011 10:53PM
Similar experience. Read a guide book, and it said it\'s always dry and hot there, but watch out if the road is wet. It was POORING rain. The road was covered in water. I had a 2WD SUV, and managed to make it through. It was worth it. Nice long beach. Fun shore-pound - but don't suggest the water unless you are wave savay. Beautiful water. There was an estuary as well. Only 2 other families within sight. It's a long haul to get there, but worth it. Bring towels, slippers and water.

So were surfers from Oahu and are planning a surf/camp trip to Kauai..We plan on renting a van and parking it in front of a surf spot and just cruising, surfing, eatting... :) is polihale a good beach for surfing? and is it hard to get camping permits last minute? also how close can you pull your car up to the beach? thx
May 04, 2011 9:05AM
I have a few questions about camping at Polihale:
1) Is there a place to camp that is away from where cars drive?
2) Is it not a good idea to camp there on a Friday night?
3) Are there other beaches to camp at that anyone recommends?
thanks for any and all advice...
May 11, 2011 8:37PM
I am considering a 2 night camping trip out here with a few friends. Once out here, what is there to do? It seems swimming is just not safe. Can you hike inland from the beach?
Jun 21, 2011 5:12AM
I will be in Honolulu for the month of September and would like to visit this beach for a long weekend. So far I see that I will need to rent a 4Wheel Drive vehicle - but if you are not camping and would just like a day trip are there any houses to rent nearby? What town should I look into? Thanks
Sep 01, 2011 8:51AM
Shelly and others...they just re-bladed the road in the last couple weeks. You can make it out there with a rental but you can not drive into the sand. There is no trails to hike because you are surrounded by the Na Pali Coast Mountains. The drive takes a long time and you sometimes think you are lost. But we made it in a tiny Nissan the company provided with no problems. The surf is extremely unsafe at times. We just let my daughter stand on the dunes with her life jacket and get slammed up the beach then ride it back down with the undertow. You can search my name on facebook and my profile picture has a wave from Palihae. The sand is soft and extremely HOT. I recommend bringing more than just sandals because the walk to the water is a good ways. Despite all the negatives, it is one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see in your life. To go in the evenings and stay the night and camp is just breathtaking. Sunset, sound, water color, mountains. You see it all. Keep in mind you have to bring a lot of supplies as the nearest store is in Waimea, some 40 min away from the beach. But all in all it is worth the experience.
Sep 05, 2011 2:11PM
Would it be possible to park at the end of the paved road and then walk the distance along the dirt road to the beach?
Nov 20, 2011 12:01PM
Our favorite beach on kauai! We drove our small rental car with no problems- some washboards on the road but if you stay on the road all the way to the parking lot you will be great. We played in the surf and talked to some friends who had taken a boat trip right by the beach when we were there and they stopped the boat to look at a 12 foot tiger shark! Creepy but we had a great time there.
Feb 12, 2012 6:00PM
Looking to go here the weekend of Feb 18, 2012. How is the road now? Would the surf make the beach too treacherous?
Mar 11, 2012 8:47AM
How is the beach in late june early july?

I used to live on Kauai and can tell you that this beach is absolutely stunning. The main things to remember are: 1. The water can have very dangerous currents, so be careful!, and 2: Respect the locals and the land by picking up your trash and being respectful.
Mar 15, 2012 7:42AM
Is the road to Polihale currently open?
May 09, 2012 9:04AM
Are there BBQ pits at the park?

Aloha, Kauai Explorer Staff
In reference to your comment on Mar 06, 2010, 6:06 p.m.
Your comment rings so true. Also , a large part of what I was cleaning up was actually an incredible collection of plastic broken pieces of all sorts, plus an unusually large number of barbie doll shoes and G.I. Joe action figures. Enough to fill up Walmart and Kmart on Kauai and Oahu. Apparently, the ocean currents and high tides use polihale beach as a year ‘round “plastics depository”. So , all the same, take lots of containers to clean up as much opala as you can. It’s a win-win, since you can work off those campfire marshmallows between naps in just 5 minutes (if you are on Hawaiian time). If you are on Mainland time..... well then....RELAX first , then fullfill the ocean’s humble request . “-)

Was to Polihale in July, the road is a wash board, but easy to drive and worth it!
Mid-week visit, only one other group on this beach,by far one of the best and most relaxing beaches on Kauai.

Any suggestions for the best camping/family/snorkel/play beach for mid-December weather? 13 & 10 yr old kids with us! Thanks!

We are planning to camp on thanksgiving .is the beach safe for swimming .we have teenagers and none ocean people .

I have heard reports of some crime (assaults by locals followed by robbery) while camping at Polihale. I am not sure how true this is. Is it pretty safe to camp there or should I look elsewhere? Any camping tips at Polihale would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Was there couple of years ago. This Beach is not for swimming. Enter at your own risk.
Aug 18, 2015 8:59AM
35 years ago we were in Kauai, and found this little restaurant in sort of a rocky cove. To get there we drove through a section of road where the trees had grown over eachother to create a beautiful natural umbrella.
Anyone remember such a location?
