I went diving at Anini the other day. The person above who said the diving is no good must have gone to the wrong place...it was beautiful like the underwater gardens of Venus...loaded with fish of every imaginable color and stripe anini_beach denise tangalin 0

Hello me and my husband we are going tomorrow to hanalei bay and i wanted to know. he is going mostly for the sun, im goinG to TAN! We live in LA and we dont have time for anything so, you think the weather is good to tan? is it worth it? hanalei_bay ro 1
Tunnels was the best place we went to snokel. We had heard about this beach the whole week we had been in Kauai, but unfortunately waited till the last day to go and explore. I wish we had gone earlier, we would have been there every day! tunnels_beach Anna 1
However, in the summertime the waves have dropped off quite a bit and the shorebreak is not so monstrous {remain ever vigilant, nonetheless}. While beaches 1, 2 and 3 are fabuloso, there is a beach to the left we like to call "Zeroes" which forms some lovely pools with the high tides. Sometimes a few shells do find there way to this beach, so if you find any live ones, please toss them back. Mahalo. secret_beach Sunny Steve 1
If you want a beautiful wedding on the westside of Kauai with the alway clear weather and beautiful sunset, you will surely fine it the most romantic place to get married. polihale_beach Sydney Yamane 1
Aloha Luke: As far as visiting in June.. Polihale should be fine to swim - flat NO waves(like glass as we locals say). Polihale is big in Winter due to the North swell wrap around. Can get a small bump from the south swell wrap around but nothing more than 3 ft on a good day. My personal experience from living da West side: Polihale Hale is da best summer time....BUT: The road is EXTREMELY bumpy, VERY VERY BAD(dirt road w/ plenty holes though a cane fields) plenty of sand sink holes in the park, and summer means we locals are there camping so expect plenty people! na_pali_coast Joey 1
Aloha! This summer I will be going to Kauai for a second time and I am in love with this beach! It is fantastic and I would totally recommend it! I was wondering how high is the shark attack rate on Kauai? poipu_beach_park Ali Hoadley 1
hey, me and my girlfriend are coming to Kauai this September, where would you recommend staying thats close to Hanalei bay? got good facilities and right on the beach? thanks, tommy hanalei_bay Tommy 1
My wife and I are visiting in June and are planning on taking a day hike to Hanakapi'ai. I've seen all of the warnings regarding this swimming at this beach (as well as Polihale, another beach we'd like to visit), but I can't tell if these beaches are always considered unsafe for swimming, or just when the surf is particularly high. Are these beaches generally safe for swimming in the early summer when the surf is typically lower? Thanks! na_pali_coast Luke 1
@ BD: During summer, this will be a great beach for body boarding. However, the waves here can get large and powerful, so if your boys are not used to thumping waves, there may be other areas nearby with more suitable surf conditions for their comfort level in the water. shipwrecks Justin Britt 1
@ Sarah: You cannot rent gear at Tunnels. However, there are several companies located nearby in Hanalei. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Brandi: We cannot give advice on hiking with a one year old. But I have seen and know people that hike the trail with babies in their backpack. Especially if you're just going to Hanakapi'ai. Does anyone else have any advice? We will also be launching a hiking sections by the end of this month. Check back for detail info on the Na Pali trail. na_pali_coast Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Poipu is our favorite vacation destination, but we have always been there in the summer. Our next trip is planned for next February. Can you give me an idea of what kind of weather we can expect? Thank you! poipu_beach_park Steven 1
Does anyone have any suggestions on hiking and camping the Napali Coast w/ a one year old in a backpack? We were really hoping to bring our daughter but it seems like it may be too dangerous. we are very outdoorsy and have hiked many Colorado trails w/ her. Thanks for any help na_pali_coast Brandi 1
Can you rent snorkel gear at Tunnels Beach? And if not, where is the cheapest, closest place to do so? tunnels_beach Sarah 1
Our family, (2 college boys, 2 parents) will be visiting Kauai for the first time early June. We hail from CT. and have visited Maui for 10 years straight and last year included the Big Island. Question: Is this the body boarding beach we should visit? Our guys are not surfers but love to body board. We will be staying at the Hyatt but have no problem jumping in the car to enjoy good beaches. That's what gets us through the miserable flight. Can't reach heaven without a bit of effort. Your site is outstanding and I look forward to any advice. Thank you!!! shipwrecks BD 1
@ Howard: 75 degrees, plus or minus 5 degrees. poipu_beach_park Justin Britt 1
@ Yvette: Glad you had fun. Answers to your questions: 1) Waves will be larger in December, but the waves next to the pier (kiddies) should still be fun for beginner surfers. Check with lifeguards before going out. 2) Hanalei is a better place to learn to surf. However, the south shore will generally have little to no waves in December, so it will be better for snorkeling. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Keri: People who are not comfortable in the water and/or are not aware of proper rip current safety tend to panic when they are being sucked away from shore. They'll swim towards shore and that will get them nowhere. Once they exhaust themselves, they drown. To an experienced water person, this seems stupid. To an inexperienced swimmer, this is reality. lumahai_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@John and Jean: Tunnels is the best place to snorkel in the area. The walk can be a distance if you do it in the soft sand from Kepuhi. Maybe a bike ride or walking the dirt road would be a better idea. Parking is horrible, so don't drive! tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Thanks for this great informative website! I have two questions. We were just on Kauai in the middle of April for spring break, and took surf lessons in Hanalei and had a great time. So great, in fact, that I'm planning a return trip for our winter break. I see from the seasonal surf trends page that the waves will be gigantic then, compared to the small waves we saw a few weeks ago. We'd like to go back to Hanalei though, but I'm wondering if it will be a completely different experience at the end of December, or if we stay close to the pier, we'll still have those little waves we had fun in. Any thoughts? Also, when we were there, people told us that it was better to be a beginner surfer in Hanalei than Poipu because the bottom is sandy in Hanalei. True? Or should we try surfing in Poipu in the winter because the waves will be smaller? (My 9-year-old and I are very much beginner surfers.) Thanks for any suggestions! hanalei_bay Yvette 1
I will be at Suite Paradise May 8-15. What is the water temperature? poipu_beach_park Howard Hensley 1
Hello. I have read about how people drown due to currents and rip tides along north shore beaches. I do not understand why being swept out is so dangerous. I mean, what happens to people out in the deeper parts of the water? It seems like once they are out there, they drown within minutes. Please explain. Thanks. lumahai_beach Keri 1
@ Clone: I'm sorry, but your comment regarding just WHO is responsible for one's own safety is out of place. Each person is responsible for him/her self. We can't blame someone else for our issues. Hawai'i Visitors can't possibly be held responsible for the myriad of potential dangers of nature. Kaua'i is wild, respect her. "Leave your front door at your own risk". The wife and I will be trying for the 3rd time, next week, to visit Kaua'i. Tried in 9/92: failed - Iniki; tried 3/06: failed - earth dam break. So, no more natural disasters, OK? And here's to never quitting to TRY to see, what we hear, is the most beautiful Island... See ya next week! kee_beach Ray 1
My family and I are coming to Kauai at the end of august and thinking of going to Hanalei bay. My son is 16 and a beginner to intermediate surfer and I was wondering if the surfing conditions will be suited to his level or whether the waves will be too small at that time of year. If so, are there beaches in Kauai that you can suggest? hanalei_bay Rob 1
my family and i will be vacationing in august. we have a 2 year old. can you recommend a place to stay with walking distance to child friendly beaches? pref condo. thanks poipu_beach_park randy 1
@ Tiffannie: It's a beautiful beach and I'm sure a wedding at sunset would be absolutely gorgeous!! However, I'm not sure a five mile, 35 minute rough terrain drive (one way)would be worth it. I would try getting there by boat if possible. If you're planning a small wedding party, you might want to consider it. If it's a large party, you might want to reconsider. We drove a Dodge Magnum to get to Polihale and all we did was bounce around like popcorn kernels. The only vehicles we saw doing more than 5 miles per hour were lifted off-road pickup trucks and Jeeps. Aside from that, everyone was driving at the same pace we were....Good luck on whatever you decide and I wish you well on your wedding. polihale_beach Ana 1
We will be staying on Kepuhi beach east of Tunnels in June.....I rarely see this beach mentioned. Where are the better spots to snorkel here along Kepuhi? Or is it better to keep walking to Tunnels? Thanks.. tunnels_beach John and Jean 1
Just got back from Kauai and there were very strong currents at Ke'e Beach. Someone drowned the day before I went there. He tried to snorkel on the outside of the reef and couldn't get back in. I went in the next day and got out only after a few minutes. I've never felt such a strong current. Even though the waves weren't coming over the reef, the current was constantly changing direction. Use your common sense when going snorkeling there and don't be afraid to pack it up if the conditions aren't right. kee_beach David Goldberg 1
@Angela: Legally, dogs are not allowed on any beach without a leash. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
A few friends will be coming in the end of June. Is there any surfing then? And how do we find good kayaking and sailing adventures. Thank you. Can't wait. hanalei_bay Sharon 1
coming to Hanalei on May 1st to check out beginner surfing and we were wondering if there are any kayak surfers or equipment to surf with as we are kayak nuts that love to rip waves! Do they allow kayaks on the waves? hanalei_bay wooodchuck 1

Are dogs allowed on this beach? tunnels_beach Angela 1
I live on Kauai and can tell you a taxi is not the way to go...I don't even think they would take you there. Your insurance is canceled on your rental if you take it down this road, but I've seen Mustangs driving to Polihale regularly. This road is probably the worst you'll ever see in your life but the sunset is worth it. Drive slow and if you get stuck call a tow company not the rental place. It'll save you money. polihale_beach Kristin 1
I am planning for my wedding in Kauai in August. In anybody's opinion, would this be a good spot? Everybody seems to really like it, but would it be worth it? I've paid good money for a high-tech photographer, and would love to have amazing pictures. Would Polihale beach be a good place with permitable weather? Thanks! polihale_beach TiffAnnie 1
@ Catherine: Grand Hyatt for snorkeling during October. kee_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Cindy: There should be some nice swells to learn to surf along Hanalei Bay. The larger the swell, the closer you will want to be to the pier, but swells will most likely be small, so pinetrees could be a good spot. If you want a lesson, there are instructors at the pier with boards ready to go. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Kristin: During December and January, If you want to do both boogie boarding and snorkeling, then you will want to spend at least a few days on the North Shore to catch some waves. The waves can be big on the North Shore during these months, but there should be some beginner surfing zones in Hanalei Bay near the pier. The South Shore will generally have better snorkeling at the time of your vacation. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Myself, my two children ages 9 & 15 and my mother want to go to Kauai in October. Either Princeville or Grand Hyatt-which would be the best area to snorkel at that time of year and over all location? thanks cathy kee_beach Catherine Parnell 1
I went to kauai about 3 weeks ago. I was determined to find this beach. I live and grew up on oahu and there aren't many beaches that sound like this one. My friends and I had an idea where it was. We knew it was left of the lighthouse and right of the bay. I knew we had to find some type of dirt parking lot (from this website), yet we couldn't see any. We drove up the road that leads to the light house, although before you get to the lighthouse, we took a left into a road that leads to houses that face the ocean. We couldn't find a beach access/path anywhere. I was so determined to find this beach that I walked down someone's property and asked the construction guys who were working on the property "how do we get to this beach!?" a local guy told us just to drive down a little more and a huge empty lot will be there. it had a trailor/office there and nothing else. we parked right outside of the fence and hopped it. we walked all the way down the field towards the ocean and then a trail started to appear. I was so excited. we followed this trail down and then a manmade stairs started to appear. we were hiking down these stairs when a opening in the trees appeared. there it was........the most beautiful site i've seen. the beach was exposed and lookin so beautiful. once we got to the bottom i saw a huge open open with perfect shorebreak. i was ecstatic and ran to the ocean. i discovered a nice sandbar to help with the shore break. and top it off, there were two local chicks already there lookin at shells. when i looked behind myself there were beautiful treefilled cliffs surrounding this gem of a beach. i will definitely return to the beach again one day. i'm sure a house will be built on the property we walked through to get to the trail. i just hope i can find another way to this beach!!!!! secret_beach Matt 1
Hi, We're visiting May 9-20 and wanted to try surfing for the first time. Is this a good beach to try it out on? Can you recommend someone to take a lesson from? hanalei_bay Cindy 1
We are hoping to bring the family (our kids are ages 9 and 12) to Kauai for the first time from December 25-January 8th. Our favorite things to do are snorkeling and boogie boarding. Initially I was thinking about spending one week on the North Shore and one week on the South Shore. However, I've been reading about the rough water conditions in the North that time of year. I would hate to spend a week on the North Shore and not be able to go in the water at all. Would we be better off just staying in the South the whole time? I just want to make sure that there are enough beaches to explore/things to do for two weeks without having to spend a lot of time driving. Thanks! tunnels_beach Kristin Anderson 1
Hi all: What TIM said is true. ANY car rental company has " fine print " that tells you to say off dirt, gravel or rough roads. Personally not sure if I'd chance it. It does look very nice though. Can you hire a taxi to take you there and come back to pick you up.? Has anyone done this before? or is it just too costly? Is it more costly to have your rental vehicle break down, and have to pay HUGE $$$$$$$$$$.?( U.S. $$ ) polihale_beach JOE 1
@ Bill: While we don't answer questions about accommodations, I can say that there should be some good snorkeling and swimming at this beach in May. However, it will all be dependent on current ocean conditions for that day. Check out daily ocean report or with a lifeguard. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1

HI..we are planning to go to Kauai in June. What would be the ocean condition at tunnel beach during that time? tunnels_beach swezin 1
@ Amanda: This is one of the most beautiful beaches on Kauai and would make a great location for a wedding. As noted earlier by "Donna Pino", there are some drawbacks. The beach's gate closes at 6pm, there is hiking involved, and sunsets can be obstructed. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! mahaulepu Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Your staff response to Ben about camping is correct, but Bill 2149 to enable overnight camping at Lydgate Park will be before the County Council on April 18, 2007. The Council and Administration are working to resolve outstanding issues regarding the 31 camp sites built in 2004 for overnight camping. The main issue will likely be security. Testimony on the matter may be submitted to: [email protected] and [email protected] and it would help to cc The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park at: [email protected] lydgate_beach_park Thomas Noyes 1
We are getting married in Kauai this September, and are looking at beaches. Would this beach be a good location for a small wedding ceremony? We will be staying near Poipu. mahaulepu amanda schaefer 1
@ Charlie Prokop: Water temperatures vary only slightly from one part of the island to the other. Temps in April should be between 74 and 78 degrees. @ Tim F.: Sounds like you have a great plan. Just be sure to check for current ocean conditions for that day. It may be that tunnels is better for snorkeling then Poipu and vice-versa. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
I read the comment by Darryl dated 031307 and disagree with his comment that the "local police take a blind eye and an apathetic attitude" towards crimes against visitors. We take a very aggresive role in the investigation, and attempt to apprehend all violators for crimes against visitors and residents. We are here for the victims. We also initiate "stake outs" of high crime areas to identify, and arrest these individuals who violate the rights of others. And, "No", the Kauai Government is aggressive about thefts against our visitors, and residents. We even have a visitors bureau in which one of their responsibilities are for visitors who were victims here. Like all locations, there will be some people that look for crimes of opportunity, and working together, we can eliminate the opportunity. lydgate_beach_park RWR 1
I will be in The Princeville area April 9-16. What are water temps like in the north compared to the south Poipu? Great website! tunnels_beach Charlie Prokop 1
I am faced with a seemingly chronic problem: where to go and what to do in only 5 days! I have 2-3 days free for beach activities, I am a novice snorkeler and my girlfriend has never snorkeled. The trip is for the dates of April 10th to 15th and at it seems like Tunnels is a must-do. I'm thinking of starting out with Poipu (where we are staying) and Lydgate to "practice" and work our way to Tunnels and Ke'e if conditions permit. Can you validate this for me or offer any advice? Thanks! tunnels_beach Tim F. 1
@ Donna: This is a beautiful beach and it will be a lot less crowded than Poipu. They do "officially" close the gates at 6 pm, however, I have seen people at that beach later than that. Sunsets may also be obstructed by some rock formations. I would recommend taking a look at some beaches when you get here before making your decision. mahaulepu Kauai Explorer Staff 1
We are going to be married on the beach on Oct 20th. We read about Maha'ulepu and thought it sounded perfect. there will be no guests and we are avid hikers. our minister suggests Poipu for the best sunsets. The beach at Maha'ulepu closes at 6pm also I believe. Any comments on the best beach for a wedding? mahaulepu Donna Pino 1
The fish tacos at the stand at the beginning of the parking area are phenomenal. I would go well out of my way to get one there. anini_beach KJ 1
@ Bon: You've picked a gorgeous beach for lounging here. But there will be so many great beaches on the North Shore during April, it will be hard to choose. The consistency of surf swells on the North Shore should be subsiding during your stay, but there could be some swells during this time, so check with a lifeguard or our daily ocean report. A good place for beginner snorkeling will be just down the way at Ke'e beach. However, Tunnels will be less crowded and offer great snorkeling as well. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Elizabeth: For young children, I would recommend this beach. It has a park and a perfect swimming area for them. They'll absolutely love it! @ Ishman: Of course, ocean conditions permitting, there can be many great places to swim in Poipu during May. This is the beginning of the surf season, though, so check for that days ocean conditions. If you're looking for a dip in the ocean, this beach is really nice. I'm assuming you mean a long swim. If this is the case, I would try Prince Kuhio's (a.k.a. PK's). The inside of PK's is protected by a reef so even if there are small waves it can still be good for swimming. If it's really flat (no waves), Shipwrecks and Maha'ulepu are the best, though. There are many great hikes on the island. We are currently building a hiking guide. It will launch by Summer. @ Ray: There is good snorkeling at Kiahuna when there are no waves. However, you are visiting in April, so there could be waves on the South Shore during this time. This is not to say that some days won't be flat and perfect for snorkeling. For your length of stay on the South Shore, you should be able to both snorkel and bodyboard. poipu_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1
My wife and I are taking our daughter and granddaughter to Poipu mid-April. We have rented a beachfront condo at Kiahuna Plantation for 8 nights and finishing with 2 nights at the Hyatt. Here's my question/concerns. I am wanting to both snorkel and bodyboard (I'm 52). Is Kiahuna Beach appropriate for both of these in that season? Do I need to go to Poipu Beach Park for snorkeling? I thought that in previous visits that I've seen people snorkeling near the Sheraton. WE CAN'T WAIT!! Great website, guys. poipu_beach_park Ray Dukes 1

@ Natalia: Poipu is a great place to vacation, and this beach has a good spot to learn to snorkel. But if you look at the seasonal surf trends you will see that May is the beginning of the South Shore's surf season. This does not mean that there won't be good days for snorkeling. Just be sure to check with the lifeguard at this beach or refer back to this website for daily ocean conditions. Another option will be to drive down to the North Shore for a day of snorkeling (ocean conditions permitting). Tunnels and Ke'e have some awesome reefs. poipu_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1

Me husband and I are planning to visit Kauai at the end of May 2007. Last time we had our honeymoon at Maui. It was just wonderful! Now someone told me that Poipu is a good place for peaceful swimming and snorkeling. Which beach do you think is best at that time of year? I'm not a grate swimmer and afraid that I will choose some "cool surf beach". That could be a disaster :( Thank you for your help poipu_beach_park Natalia 1
@ Cinda: It is the surf season on the South Shore during summer. This does not mean there will be large surf everyday. Most days, this beach park will be great for swimming, just ask the lifeguard before you go into the water. poipu_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1

Hi Steven, My husband, Glenn and I hiked down to Secret Beach and it is exactly as you described... including the "shower"... just beautiful. We noticed that dozed area you are talking about and there was a construction gentleman present & we asked him regarding the moving of dirt... new homes are being built up there ~ Hopefully, the beach will still be accessable ~ I would think, that the trail would be a "Grandfathered" trail to this hidden gem keeping it allowed in the future ~ What a place, huh? The surfers there are great to watch on 1st Beach and Glenn and I were the only ones present on the shhhh!! Secret ~ beach~! All ours..... Makes me want to hurry back.. another Nor'Easter is slamming us today ~ it's snowing out, the winds ripping and I so badly want to be there... I'm there in spirit, for sure... Visited the park/beach on 3/15. The small swimming area on the left was full of debris, the large swimming area had quite a bit of wood and other floating debris near the outer edge. The sandy part of the beach on the right had wood stacked all over the beach. Is this usual? It made for a very uninviting sight and we left without entering the water. lydgate_beach_park R Ariens 1
Beautiful, peaceful and serene beach park. Feeding the fish is not a myth. They come right up to you and snatch food right out of your hand. In addition to the main pool, there is a smaller pond for the kiddies located to the left of the large pool. However, I was ripped off at this beach. There are a team of locals that cruise this beach waiting for unsuspecting tourists. In addition, the local police take a blind eye and an apathetic attitude. I suspect the Kauaian government isn't too aggressive about curbing thefts because the goods stay in the local economy. This is not a reason to avoid Lydgate, just remember the rule. If you go to Lydgate, go in a pair or more. When one person plays, the other stays with the belongings. Do your part and don't feed the buggas. Mahalo! lydgate_beach_park Darryl 1
@ Lynn: As you can see in the seasonal surf trends, surf heights on the North and South shores during September are very similar. So your best and safest snorkeling will all depend on current ocean conditions while you are here. Since this is the case, maybe you should make your decision based on what part of the island you liked better. Poipu will have closer proximity to shopping and restaurants while Tunnels will be more adventurous. And yes, there are turtles at tunnels : ) poipu_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1

@ Denise: Do you mean you had a hard time finding a suitable beach for swimming with your family? @ Linda: In May, the surf will generally be smaller and better for snorkeling on the North Shore, but it's all dependent on the current ocean conditions for that day. If you are looking for waves during this time check out a beach on the South Side. @ Lynn: Makua does have a lifeguard. The station is located a ways down from Tunnels at the beach park. September is when the North Shore's surf season begins. But there should be good snorkeling on days when the surf is not large. Check out the current ocean conditions on this website or ask the lifeguard. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1

@ Sean: As you can see in the seasonal surf trends, surf is on the decline on the North Shore in February and even more so in March. There could be some good snorkeling days, but there will be some good surf days too. Check for current ocean conditions to help make your decision while you're here. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
We are planning on making our 4th trip to northern kauai in feb/march 2008. Will snorkeling be an option then? tunnels_beach Sean 1
I remember camping here several times in the 70's and it was Anini then. Whatever it is called - it is beautiful! anini_beach J. Jones 1
This is my favorite beach on Kauai. The visuals are stunning: The deep brown of the rocks, the green of the trees, the white of the sands, the blue of the ocean, all elemental colors, all juxtapose to create a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts. Remote. Untamed. Raw. Very primeval experience. FYI: Both I and my friends have drunk from and showered in the water dripping profusely from the mountain rock, with no adverse reactions. Tastes clean. This is truly paradise. I pray that access will always be granted to this beach. I was there in January 2007 and someone had attempted to grade the dirt parking lot with a bulldozer. The lot was all mud. Wassup with that? Do you know? secret_beach Steven Miyake 1
@ Honu: April is still surf season on the North Shore, but the swells are generally less consistent by then. This could mean great snorkeling at Ke'e and Tunnels, but it will always depend on the current ocean conditions. If the surf is large on the North Shore, there's always the South and East Sides! @ Tom: There are companies that rent boards right at the pier, so you don't have to lug the boards around. Otherwise, there are some surf stores in Hanalei that will rent you surf boards and soft racks to carry them. There are companies that offer scuba tours. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
This is a great website. Thanks for providing all this awesome information for visitors. We're going to Princeville in early April. My kids are 13 and 16 and would like to do some warm-water beginning surfing. Hanalei pier looks promising, but where can we rent a soft tops and a rack. Also, should we bring the snorkeling gear, or is there a good place to rent it for about 10 days? The reef at Ke'e and Tunnels sound really nice if there's no swell. Do folks scuba there too? hanalei_bay Tom 1
Aloha mai! My husband and I will be visiting Kaua'i (staying in Princeville) for the first time on April 9 through 16. I was wondering what the ocean conditions are for snorkeling during this time of year. Any beaches we should avoid? Mahalo a nui for your kokua! hanalei_bay Honu Hula 1
@ Jim: Generally during the summer, the waves are smaller on the North Shore, which includes Hanalei Bay. This makes it great for the kids. However, surf swells can come at any time, so it is a good idea to check daily ocean conditions or ask a lifeguard (there are two along Hanalei Bay). @ Ruth: The waves will be smaller in June. This could be great for a beginner learning to surf. Hook up with a surf instructor while you're here, they will be able to give some helpful tips, and most importantly, point you in the direction of good waves for your grandson to learn on. Both of you might want to check out the seasonal surf trends for more information. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
I will be coming to Kauai the first part of June with my 18 year old grandson. He is a snowboarder and wants to learn to surf. How are the waves for a beginner at that time of the year? hanalei_bay Ruth 1
How is Hanalei Bay for a family visit in late August? Can children go in the water there or would that be too dangerous? Never been to Hawaii, don't know what to expect. THanks! hanalei_bay Jim 1
Regarding Ke'e Beach, I will be visiting in June and have read in some guide books that snorkeling can be fantastic just outside of the lagoon. Is this actually safe when it is calm? Do you just go over the top of the reef or is there a recommended place of access? I visited years ago and remember a life guard. Still have one? Can't wait to have a great time at one of the best places on earth. kee_beach Patrick 1
@ Jeanne: Tunnels! Anytime, hands down ~ that's it!!! It's georgeous ~ we walked about fifty to sixty feet to the entrance of Tunnels ~ from a house we rented nearby, across the street... it is just perfect!~ (the particular house we rented had a single rental, a double rental and the entire upstairs of a beautiful home).. there are many options ~ in that area and it's ~ affordable! Of course, you can camp just about anywhere up from Tunnels and nearby Ke'ee... there are very nice campgrounds available ~ complete with showers/toilet facilities...you can do this very inexpensively and that's how we're going next time...Anini Beach campground/campsites are amazingly gorgeous ~ you don't even feel like you're camping.. serious! As for the house we rented...I'm not sure we can say about it on this site ~ the house was located literally a stones throw from Tunnels Beach. It's a short 2 mile ride/hike to Ke'e beach, from Tunnels ~ on the road or even hiking along the shoreline in the sand...(most beaches are not marked with signs) either way, you can walk the beaches North or South as well... just amazing ~ bring your Teva sandals!!! ~ or for hiking, your Keene's ~ neat shoes for the trails... Ke'e is VERY crowded ~ many, many people park there for either hiking up the Na Pali coastline, or to stay at the beach during the day...you have to get an early start there to get a parking spot... there is an overflow parking area, Just prior to the end of the road on Ke'e. As for Tunnels, there was literally hardly anyone present on this particular beach when my husband and I were visiting there this past January ~ we literally, felt like it was ours~! Hardly anyone near us at all ~ no joke, we're talking about 20 people at the same time on the beach.. if that... really! We stayed for 2 weeks on the North Shore and we were one week in Waimea, (South) ~ we LOVED it on the North Shore ~ I believe, in August, you'll probably have a better opportunity to swim in the ocean, than that in the winter time... heed the signs and red flag warnings... they are there for a reason... when you're on Tunnels, if you are looking toward Bali Hai ~ there is a lifeguard station further down ~ toward where it juts out and takes a turn toward Ke'e... Oh, even though many say it rains up there, on the North Shore area... we experienced rain at night.. one day, it spit rain and cleared up and if it does rain, all you do is get in your car and drive an hour to Kapaa, Poi Pu, or Waimea, etc.. head South and usually, you'll find sun somewhere on Kauai... truly! Even in the rain, it's beautiful ~ You can go on the internet and look up rentals, or contact a local Realtor in that area ~ perhaps, they can connect you with rentals available ~ ours was $160.00 a night (for the entire upstairs of a gorgeous home), a studio, $60.00 a night, and the other double ~ $90.00 a night... very reasonable. We loved it there! (and do we miss it! it's snowing outside as I type this a Nor'easter is blasting us...brrrr!!!) Best to you and yours! Aloha ~ Kitty kee_beach Kitty 1
My spouse and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai last September. I dream about it at least once a week. Poipu beach, in particular, features prominently in my dreams. I truly feel like I left a piece of myself there, and can't wait to return to reclaim it. I'm particularly excited to introduce our daughter (now just a toddler) to this magical place. poipu_beach_park A. Taylor 1
@ Jami: When the surf gets large, the lifeguards on the North Shore post "No Swimming" signs on the beach. This is intended for inexperienced ocean goers. I don't think you're going to keep Andy Irons and the local surf crew out of the water when the waves get big. That's how they like 'em! poipu_beach_park Justin Britt 1
If you had a choice to rent a house near Ke'e Beach or Tunnels Beach in August, which would you choose? kee_beach Jeanne McDermott 1
@ Chuck: There will be surf for all levels in Hanalei during this time. The best thing to do in this area is consult a lifeguard. There are 2 stations along this beach and they will be able to point you in the right direction based on the surf for that day. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Courtney: It depends on what kind of weather you are looking for. If you want it sunny and warm, Poipu will be a better choice for mid March. But Hanalei will be lusher, cooler and sunny most of the time. But chance of rain is really good! tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
I love Tunnels beach because it is soo beautiful AND mostly because my boyfriend proposed to me there!! We are going back to Kauai in march for our honeymoon, it is my favorite place in the world! Would you recommend staying in Hanalei or Poipu area for better weather in the mid March? tunnels_beach Courtney 1
My husband and I also just came back (Feb 3,2007) from a week in Kauai and I felt the same disgust with all the trash that is left at the campsite and all over the island for that matter. It's is such a beautiful place I don't understand why it isn't a priority for some to keep it this way. I would also like to reiterate how important it is to NOT LEAVE valuables in your car. Even if it's just for a quick minute to check out the map at the Kalalau trailhead. Our plan to hike the trail over a period of three days was cancelled due to the theft of our backpacks which had all the camping gear, stove, water purification, food, clothes, hiking permits... everything on the first day of our holiday. We reported the theft and after buying a few items of clothing to get us through the week we were able to enjoy several day hikes. Perhaps one day we'll go back to try it again. na_pali_coast Shelly 1
Don't turn around when you encounter the road, the beach and waves takes your breath away when you finally reach the destination. The sunset was worth the 40 minute drive for 4.2 miles of rough terrain! polihale_beach Karen 1
I visited Kauai in December. A lot of the other beaches had high surf so I ended up discovering Kalapaki, which was much calmer. What a great beach! The picture doesn't even do it justice. kalapaki_beach Marie 1
I will be coming to Kauai in the middle of October. What should I expect as far as surf conditons, in general. Beginner to Intermediate. Board and Body. I'll be there for a week. Any information would be appreciated. hanalei_bay Chuck 1
Hanalei Bay is AWESOME!!!! My canoe club went up to Kauai from Hilo, and we were amazed by the sheer beauty of the island!!! Being able to see lush green mountain sides with visible waterfalls all while practicing for the big day on a beautiful white sand beach!!!! AWESOME!!!! hanalei_bay Pumehana 1

The longest white sandy beach in Hawaii! Polihale means in Hawaiian "A leeping Off place for spirits" or "House of Death". It is full of mystery and spirit. The best star gazing on the planet. What goes on in the sky there is "unconfirmed". Drive slow getting there, don't ever drink the water from the various faucets, pack out your own trash, don't drive a two wheel drive into the sand, wear plenty sun screen, don't even think of swimming if you are not an above average swimmer when get waves, nowadays look out for speeding SUV's on the sand, try listen for the goats on the cliffs, feed the chickens and cats, wear your sandles or get 3 inch Keawe up your heel, leave if it starts to rain and you don't have four wheel drive....say hello to the County of Kauai park recreation guys...they are the best and have been doing the job there for a hundred years before you were born.....they can tell you a lot. polihale_beach James 1
I was body surfing last week and a tourist came out into the water. He was sucked over the falls on a medium sized wave, and to my surprise, he came out for some more punishment. He was waving for his friend to come join him, but his friend was smart and didn't want any part of it. Within a matter of minutes the man was sucked out to sea by a rip current. He was struggling and swimming against the current. He was done for and was screaming for help. My friend and all around nice guy, Ryan Hanneberg, made the rescue. The man was so relieved to get back to shore he gave Ryan a huge shaka. Moral of the story. Just because you see people in the water, it doesn't mean it's safe to go out. Many locals are experienced water people. Ask before you go out. Play it safe. It's not worth dying for. secret_beach Justin Britt 1
@ Ben: As far as we are aware, camping will never be allowed here again. lydgate_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Jennifer: Well, you picked the right beach. Haena Beach Park / Makua is probably the most similar. It's just even more beautiful. Have a great time! @ Fred Barrow: We do not keep track of percentage of days. However, I can say that late October is the beginning of the North Shore surf season. So you could get some really nice snorkeling days as the swells are not generally as consistent at that point. But you should always check the Ocean Report on this website for daily ocean conditions for your safety. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Just spent the last week hanging on Tunnels...It was amazing as usual. Cannot wait to get back. Waves were a bit big but this is the early part of the year.... I will be back soon!!!! tunnels_beach Joette 1
My husband and I just returned from celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary on Kauai for a 3 week stay there ~ it was our first time on this Hawaiian Island (we've been to Maui and Oahu once before, 3 yrs. ago...) While on Kauai we hiked many of the amazing trails every other day all over the island and explored many of the beaches from North to South and we truly loved it there ~ we hiked into this particular beach on Na pali coastline and then on to the falls. The trail to the falls was poorly marked and it was very trecherous hiking ~ so, take your time and BE very, very careful~ we recommend wearing proper hiking shoes, bring poles, that would be helpful~ a nightlight if you're getting out late just before dark ~ and some food and water ~ it's a glorious hike with big rewards! THe beach was spectacular and heed the surf warnings ~ 82 people lost there in particular... we recommend looking, not swimming in the wintertime... The only disheartening thing we experienced on the entire island, was the disrespect of campers who left their trash/garbage behind ~ right above the beach up towards the trail head to the falls... It really left us feeling quite disgusted that folks would have the gall to trash this paradisical place. Shame on them! Please, if you're going to hike the trails, or camp overnight ~ be respectful of this beautiful paradise and just leave your quiet footprints behind ~ don't deface the bamboo groves, trees,by carving your initials in the bark ~ or pick the flowers ~ or TRASH the place... bring out and carry out what you brought in...PLEASE!! only leave with your memories and your photographs and PLEASE, PLEASE, your trash! Be respectful of Kua'i so others can enjoy the immense natural beauty that is breath taking indeed and not leaving behind what others have to feel sickened by ~ with all the heaps of trash left behind ~ it truly left us with an awful feeling ~ and disappointed us greatly, that folks would not respect this beautiful Isle, not to mention ignore all the signs kindly asking one to carry out all that is carried in on the camping trails. Perhaps more signage or enforcement (steeper fines) could be implemented ~ or have rangers physically present in this particular area? perhaps, then, and only then, people would take it seriously? (sigh) ~ don't even like suggesting it... but it WAS/IS that bad. A TRUE hiker/camper would NEVER do that!!! Also, heed the warnings and take them seriously ~ they are there for a reason.. you may not only be putting your life in danger, but others who may have to try and save yours. Suggestions about the trash? *You could hire me/us to enforce it... (smile) ~ I'd go back there in a heartbeat ~ it is THAT beautiful on Kua'i... it is our prayer, that Kua'i keeps it's integrity and not over develope commercially ~ it's Aloha Spirit is intoxicating and so relaxing ~! Truly, it's paradise ~ ~ see you on the trails when we return! May take a year ~ (And we can't wait!!!) Aloha ~ Kitty na_pali_coast Kitty 1

Over the years I have visited Ke'e beach at different times of the day. By far the most beautiful is first thing in the morning. Arrive by 8 a.m. and you may be one of only a few people strolling the beach. When snorkeling you maybe one of the lucky ones to swim near the sea turtles. Remember the fine for touching or harassing a sea turtle is $100,000 (Yes! 5 zeros) If you have time try and hike at least a mile or so along the Kalalau Trail. The entrance is opposite the main parking area. At a certain point you will get an magnificent view of Ke'e beach and the first true glimpse of the Na Pali coastline. Parking at Ke'e beach can be very difficult during the summer period. Drive carefully through the beach area as there are many unexpected tree branches and roots to damage your [rental] car. Unfortunately, my wife's beach bag was stolen one year. So think safe on land and sea! kee_beach Richardmac 1
This is the perfect beach for kids including infants and beginner snorkelers. The park has a wonderful playground and is wonderful for picnics. We like this beach much better than Poipu Beach Park. It was way too crowded for our infant when we were there in April. lydgate_beach_park Michelle 1

Great snorkeling at Tunnel's! I also saw a 5-6 ft. white-tip reef shark there last summer (2006). Sand gets very hot in the summer and there's very little parking available. tunnels_beach Ernie 1
Tunnels offers some of the best snorkeling on Kauai. In the summer the conditions were perfect! Winter is a different matter. Pay attention to surf conditions. Parking is horrible - a couple of turnouts alond the road that fill up early. Haena Beach park is nearby - but it's a hike back to tunnels - especially if you're hauling ice chests, snorkel stuff, kids stuff .... Our favorite snorkeling beach. tunnels_beach Philip Deffer 1
We will be visiting your great state and MAKUA on Kauai in late Oct. of 2007. Do you keep % of days for that time of year that are good for snorkeling due to ocean conditions in late Oct. at Makua. Also are there many shark spottings inside the reef? This is our 3rd trip to Kauai but first in late Oct. Thanks Fred tunnels_beach Fred Barrow 1
THE most gorgeous unspoiled place! It is tricky getting out there (not for the faint hearted) but well worth it. Go well before sunset - they're amazing. polihale_beach Cindy 1
This is one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. Its just too bad that Hotels and Beach front Vacation Rentals Almost NEVER WARN the visitors about the Dangerous conditions that can occure at this beach. I think the Kauai Visitors Bureau should be to blame for all the drownings on this Island. They will not warn the visitors of any dangers with a simple video on the plane because that might deplete REVENUES from their bank account. This is a growing problem on kauai. All the deaths are overwhelming. Something needs to be done. You Guys are doing a great job with this website. Thanks.... kee_beach Clone 1
I noticed a "no swimming" sign at Brennecke's beach on 1/10/07. It looked like a new sign. Just wondering if it was posted because of dangerous conditions or something else. Unfortunately, I noticed people were swimming anyway. poipu_beach_park jamilee carter 1
This is a nice beach. Children have their own cove to the left (as you look at the water) and adults can enjoy snorkeling to the right. This has more open water compared to Salt pond or Lydgate so I would suggest to be a bit more experienced. Has a fun playground area for the kids. poipu_beach_park Kelly 1
This is a great spot for children or people that are new to snorkeling or afraid to snorkel. You can see the fish without snorkeling. It is great for young children to lay on a boogey board and look into the water. They see the fish without even getting in!! lydgate_beach_park Kelly 1

My family has lived on Kauai for nearly 30 yrs. I've taken my kids to Lydgate as well as use it myself when I'm here visiting my dad. I just wanted to note that the lifeguards at Lydgate are the most helpful, friendly, and available of any of the beaches on Kauai. I will tell you my Anini secret. On those occasions when we arrive on the island before our accomodations are ready, we drive to Anini to pass the time. First find bread, wine, and cheese at the Kilauea Farmer's Market next to Kong Lung Center on the road to Kilauea. Then proceed to Anini. Drive past the beach park, around the big curve to the left and watch for a parking turn out on the left. Park there and find a comfortable place among the rocks under great shade. You can hang your mainland clothes on the tree and slip into the island way. anini_beach Mike Bradford 1
I'm planning a trip to Polihale in July. This may be a stupid question cause there are always waves, but how is the surf that time of the year? polihale_beach Chris 1
Be careful at this beach ! I had to pull a father of two out of a rip current this August. The shorebreak really breaks hard here and I noticed lots of inexperienced swimmers and kids in the water seemingly unaware of the situation. I wouldn't let my kids go in (10 and 12 years old) but ultimately I had to go in to rescue the dad who got in trouble. Listen to the lifeguards and swim where they can help you out. Even the best swimmer who is unfamiliar with the currents and breaks in Hawaii can get in big trouble fast. Most importantly, use common sense and be safe! thanks ray secret_beach Ray 1

kealia a beguinner's surf spot? not 80% of the time. Far too often, Kealia pounds, and it can be like a washing machine out there. chaotic wave wrap, shorebreak, rip currents... not the best place to begin. Only typicaly controlled at the very far north end of the beach inside the jetty. Kalapaki - not listed is a FAR BETTER place to learn to surf. Rock Quarries with sand, and no reef is often good too. the bay protects a bit. kealia_beach jonathan jay 1
Just remember that RENTAL CAR POLICIES ARE VOID IF YOU DRIVE TO THIS BEACH. If anything happens all costs for getting out is assumed by the renter. We found out the hard way. It is in the fine print of the rental car companies rental agreement folders. Our car broke down and we had to pay HUGE $$$ to get out. Hertz Car Rental said that even though it was a mechanical failure, since we went out there it was our responsibility. They said all car rentals have same policy. polihale_beach Tim 1
Great surfing beach for those who are experienced ONLY. If you are not experienced, hang towards the left side of the beach where the waves are generally not as strong and cool off. This is a local's beach, so respect it accordingly. kealia_beach Mario 1
I have a question that I would like addressed to prove a point. Last week, while vacationing at the Islander on the Beach, my drunk husband wished to go night swimming off the beach right in front of the hotel. I told him that was not a good idea and literally fought him to stay on dry land. Could you please post an honest & detailed commentary of what a drunk grown man (even a good swimmer) could expect if he chose to swim off of the beach directly off the shore of this hotel at night? Thank you! wailua_beach Annonymous 1
I'm going to second (or third) the "rough surf, not good for kids" comments. A few months ago I thought I'd just run in waist deep and get wet before hiking to Maha'ulepu and kind of got crunched in the shorebreak and actually flipped over by the waves (couldn't dive through the waves b/c I had my glasses on since I was just running in for a quick splash). Another guy came out after I'd been thrashed saying he had also gotten beaten up by the waves. Plenty of kids (the teenaged crazy kind doing flips with boogie boards) were having fun, though. shipwrecks cs 1

Please see seasonal surf trends for a graph that shows average wave height by month. @ Monica: Generally during November, swells are larger on the North shore where Tunnels is located. This doesn't mean that there won't be calm days perfect for snorkeling. @ Lori: north swells will be declining and south swells will be on the rise in April. However, on any given day, the ocean conditions can be different for the norm on that given month. So, the lesson here is to be aware of current ocean conditions. Check the Ocean Report or consult a lifeguard before entering the water that day. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
There are many companies that rent surfboards, but most of them are for learning. If you are an experienced surfer and want a quality board, you should bring your own. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
I'm wondering what conditions are normally like in April? We were hoping for it to be pretty mellow, as we have a one year old, but also love to snorket and dive. Most info talks about summer or winter not the transition months. tunnels_beach lori Guidone 1
Aloha - Thanks for providing this most appreciated excellent service! My wife and I will be traveling to the Hanalei Bay area this December. I would prefer not to travel w/my surf boards. YES...You are right. We used to camp there in the 70's and it was already called "Anini". My dad still called it Wanini though... anini_beach Nakoa 1
I agree with you guys; the best snorkelling that I've ever done. I did see a shark there, but it was only a 5-6 foot white-tip (luckily, not a tiger!), which took off as soon as I saw it. There were also many sea turtles as soon as we got beyond the shallow part of the reef. Just amazing! tunnels_beach Phil Chung 1
I am going to be visiting for the first time at the end of November. Am I going to be able to snorkel or even swim at Tunnels at this time, or will it be too dangerous? tunnels_beach Monica 1

Aloha! This is one of Kauai's best beaches for sunsets and snorkeling, there happens to be a great restaurant right there also. My young daugters and I love snorkeling here, they learned at Lydgate and now love to go to PK's. This is not a hang-out beach, really good for watersports, but not really hanging out since it's right by the road and is rocky. As soon as you get your gear on, go parallel to the bottom and make your way into deeper waters. And please, don't step on the reef or feed the fish. This damages our coral communities. prince_kuhio Chandra Walker 1
I have lived on the sunny South Side for 3.5 years and I love Shipwrecks Beach! There is great hinking from Shippy's to Maha'ulepu, sand dunes and caved are fun for exploring with the keiki. However, it is also the place where I learned my respect for the ocean when a girl friend and I got too far out while playing in the waves when a large set came out of nowhere and held us under, wave after wave, during the whole set. So be careful and cautious, NOT a good place for children to swim. The locals surfing know what they are doing, so no go if you aren't familiar with the break! shipwrecks Chandra Walker 1
Snorkeler's heaven. Beautiful beach with huge reef. There is a normally weak, but often present lateral rip current to pay attention to. Just make sure you pop your head up from time to time to check where you are. Lifeguarded~ but still check for ocean conditions. I have been here many times, and no shark sightings yet. tunnels_beach Karen 1
This beach fronts the Hyatt. Public access between Poipu Bay Resort Golf Course & the Hyatt. Usually, the Hyatt flag's the ocean conditions. This beach is useful for boogie boarding and body surfing. Not really a great swimming beach. On that note, I think this beach is always difficult to swim unless you are a strong swimmer. High surf makes the surf particularly tricky. This would NOT be my choice for swimming with my small kids..... EVER, as the waves crash right on the steep shoreline! However, they do enjoy playing in the sand and seeing (not touching!!) the occasional monk seal. You can also pick up a easy shoreline hike that is over half a mile long with beautiful scenery. All in all, a nice beach with beautiful scenery (Hyatt) and hikes, but you need to know how to swim well to go into the water (no small kids). shipwrecks Karen 1
I lived in Kauai for a few months and Tunnels is probably the BEST snorkeling and diving I've ever experienced! I truly do miss it there! tunnels_beach Kelly Noonan 1
@ Sarah: Surf is generally larger during winter, however there are opportunities for beginner surfers during these months. As far as learning to surf, next to the pier will generally have smaller waves. However, I would recommend viewing our ocean report and asking a lifeguard before going out. Also, there are several surf schools that can point you in the right direction if you take a lesson from them. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
Aloha Dawson - Yes, this is where Bethany Hamilton lost her arm to the shark attack. She was about 1/4 mile from shore at the time. And yes, there are sharks in all Hawaiian waters. Statistically you are more likely to get injured in a car accident. As far as safety goes I would be more concerned with ocean conditions. tunnels_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
I'll be there in January. Will there be places in the bay, where the waves are small enough for a beginner surfer? I see the wave report says they are gigantic that time of year. I'm concerned about safety. hanalei_bay Sarah 1
While in Kauai, we nicknamed this the "Most Beautiful Beach in the World" Absolutely georgeous and not crowded at all. Stay to the right and take the dirt road all the way until it ends to get close to where the beach and mountain reach each other. polihale_beach RL 1
Isn't this also the same place where that girl got her arm bit off by a Tiger Shark? tunnels_beach D. Dawson 1
Actually, the surf in this area is really good if you know what you are doing. Like all surf spots - you must match the location with the ability of the surfer. Waihai is a super fun, mellow wave (but the reef is right under you). poipu_beach_park Winston Welborn 1
I'm a local boy and consider Mahaulepu to be one of the great treasures on Kauai. It is different from other Kauai beaches. If you like mellow hiking try parking at Shipwrecks and wandering along the shoreline trails all the way to Mahaulepu. A great adventure for big and small kids. After the hot hike you can jump into the water at Shipwrecks, cool off, and then take a shower at the beach facilities provided by the Hyatt. If you are staying at the Hyatt - even better! mahaulepu Winston Welborn 1
I like to stop off at Wailua and eat my plate lunch from Blossoming Lotus. Sometimes the surf at the rivermouth is incredible and the area is generally uncrowded. Most of the time the trade winds make for choppy seas and the Wailua River (with water from Waialeale) makes the water murky. "If da water stay Murcury - no go out!!!" wailua_beach Karl Herfurt 1
I sometimes like to jump in the water and cool off at Kealia - especially after mountain biking the epic trails in the area. Kealia loves westerly winds - a rare condition but it makes the water beautiful. kealia_beach Karl Herfurt 1
Secrets is great but watch out for the strong waves and shady people. secret_beach Karl Herfurt 1
Anini is great if you are looking for ease of access, facilities and calm water. There is plenty parking and grassy areas to picnic, play games or take a nap. The snorkeling is not great, but the large fringing reef protects the shorline when other north shore areas are slammed by big waves. I like Anini. anini_beach Karl Herfurt 1
There are multiple lifeguard stations along Hanalei Bay. Ask a lifeguard about the hazards, they will be happy to help. hanalei_bay Kauai Explorer Staff 1
@ Sela: This is a great place for snorkeling, but I would not recommend walking out on the rocks when there are big waves crashing onto the cliffs (or snorkeling either if there are large waves). That would be very dangerous! kee_beach Kauai Explorer Staff 1
This beach will take your breath away. The Na Pali coastline is so beautiful and majestic, it is hard to put into words. Even though its not a great swimming beach, the bumpy road is well worth the trip to see the view alone. polihale_beach Lori 1
great place for snorkeling..if you walk onto the rocky trail on your left you can catch the most awesome sunset pictures with big waves crashing onto the cliffs..well worth the trip! dont forget your camera..you'll regret not bringing it! kee_beach sela lincoln 1
great site! poipu_beach_park Aaron Habermann, Kauai Lifeguard Association 1
Thanks for the advise I will be at Hanalei next week and I am looking forward to a good time! who should I look for to ask about the hazards and is there a good Surf teacher to ask? hanalei_bay Eddy Nicholson 1
This is a good swimming beach for kids when the surf is not high. However, it can get a bit windy later in the afternoon. Pavillions. In my opinion, the best side of the beach is toward the salt ponds~ entrance near Port Allen airport. It is close to Inter-Island Helicopter, so kids can watch choppers take off and land. Perfect stop after going to Jo Jo's in Waimea to get my shave-ice fix!! salt_pond_beach Karen 1
Beautiful beach (there is no area in Kauai that is not beautiful!) but even more so, the houses in the area are a treat to see! anini_beach Leslie Glassmann 1
Excellent conditions for children in the man-made ponds. There are lots of fish and on calmer days visibility is pretty good. I taught my 5-year-old how to snorkel here and she loved swimming with the fish! The playgrounds are awesome~ however can get kinda hot on warmer days (check slides for heat). Clean bathroom facilities and the lifeguards are right there overlooking everything you do in the water. lydgate_beach_park Mario 1
Hanakapiai Beach warning: high surf, dangerous breaks & strong currents have led to the death of 82 people and counting......... na_pali_coast Kalina 1
Yes, the comment above is true, people do get swept off the rocks. Here is a helpful hint, if the rocks are wet, stay off of them. The ocean waves have been there and you should not be there. I have seen people walk on wet rocks and after 5 minutes another set of waves come and cover the people. There are some basic rules to safety. Here is my basic rule, during large surf days, don't walk on wet rocks. My second rule, have fun!!! lumahai_beach WALTER 1
Hanalei Bay is one of the best beaches in Hawaii. When the surf is big the water is moving faster and makes it more difficult to swim. Hanalei is over a mile of beach and there are various scenarios that take place at the same time. I can surf 12 foot surf at Hanalei Point, at the same time my wife will surf 2 foot surf at Hanalei Pier. The point would be life threatening for her, but at the pier she can have fun and be safe. Ask the lifeguard for advice if you are visiting, they will usually caution on the safe side. Listen to the lifeguard, the ocean in Hawaii can test the best swimmer and this is one test you don’t want to fail. Enjoy your vacation and stay safe. Ask the lifeguard, listen to his/her advice and most of all have fun! hanalei_bay Walter 1
I think that you should let it be known that many people have died here by being swept off the rocks. Thus, in my opinion the warning should be even sterner......... even if it sounds frightening to people. Thanks. lumahai_beach Karen 1
Probably more people have drowned at Ke`e Beach at the end of the road than anywhere on Kaua`i, though Lumaha`i ("Bali Hai") is a strong contender for first place. The currents are deceptively strong, and Lumaha`i's sneaker waves can run up on the beach and grab you away before you know it. READ AND HEED THE WARNING SIGNS! Despite the remote location, the area can get very crowded with tourists, and traffic and parking can become a problem. Too bad, because this is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. kee_beach William 1
Watch out for speeding trucks and SUVs. At least one person has been run over here while sunbathing. In the past, fishermen drove slowly in their army Jeeps, all following the same path. Now, heedless drivers race all over the beach with their giant tires, and there is not one smooth-sand spot on the entire beach. The easiest access is from the Kekaha end, if you don't mind being right next to the highway. To get away from the highway, you can drive west down the beach, but the Navy has barricaded it about two miles down in case terrorists are driving on the beach. This action is of doubtful legality, but the state has done nothing to protect public access. The Navy does allow access, with permit, to the west end at Major's Bay, and the upside here is that driving on the beach is prohibited (or was the last time I was there), so it's a far better beach experience. The winter surf at Major's can be exceptional. The strength of the currents here cannot be overemphasized. You can quickly be swept far away from the place you entered the water. kekaha_beach William 1
@ Erica: Yes, we would not recommend surfing at Poipu Beach Park. Try Hanalei Bay during the summer, you'll be stoked! poipu_beach_park Kauai Explorer Staff 1
lovely beach but horrible surfing. poipu_beach_park erica 1
Even though I live on the North Shore the occasional trip to the South shore is super fun. The beach park has a nice lawn and calm water for relaxing and from Shipwrecks to Mahaulepu is incredible exploring. poipu_beach_park Winston Welborn 1
There's a great river that poors out into the ocean at this beach. The river actually has more activities, including kayaking and waterskiing. There are some good surf spots around here too, but not for learning. wailua_beach Justin Britt 1
This is definitely one of the best beaches on the island. It offers everything except for snorkeling, plus there are several lifeguards stationed around the bay to keep things safe. hanalei_bay Justin Britt 1
