Po'ipu Beach Park
A.K.A. Brenneke’s, Waiohai Beach • Photo by Douglas Peebles
Recreation begins here for the south shore. There is a great protected area for swimming and snorkeling - with surf breaks offshore (for experienced surfers). Excellent facilities.
Things To Do
- Snorkeling
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Bodyboarding
- Paddling
- Beach walks
- Family days
Cool Because
Poipu has recieved numerous "top 5" beach awards - both national and worldwide. On many "winter" days when the North shore is stormy and rough, Poipu is calm like a swimming pool.
Hazards
Although the shoreline is mostly protected from large surf, dangerous conditions can exist in the water. Strong currents and waves breaking on reef. Sharp coral and slippery rocks.
Topography
Sandy and grassy shoreline protected by rocky jetties. Mixed reef and sand underwater.
Not Good For
If you are looking for privacy, Poipu might not be the spot. During warm summer months and peak holiday seasons Poipu can become very crowded.

Even though I live on the North Shore the occasional trip to the South shore is super fun. The beach park has a nice lawn and calm water for relaxing and from Shipwrecks to Mahaulepu is incredible exploring.

lovely beach but horrible surfing.

@ Erica: Yes, we would not recommend surfing at Poipu Beach Park. Try Hanalei Bay during the summer, you'll be stoked!

great site!

Actually, the surf in this area is really good if you know what you are doing. Like all surf spots - you must match the location with the ability of the surfer. Waihai is a super fun, mellow wave (but the reef is right under you).

Island born, former native, just want
to say I enjoyed your web site. Thanks for the memories.

This is a nice beach. Children have their own cove to the left (as you look at the water) and adults can enjoy snorkeling to the right. This has more open water compared to Salt pond or Lydgate so I would suggest to be a bit more experienced. Has a fun playground area for the kids.

I noticed a "no swimming" sign at Brennecke's beach on 1/10/07. It looked like a new sign. Just wondering if it was posted because of dangerous conditions or something else. Unfortunately, I noticed people were swimming anyway.

@ Jami: When the surf gets large, the lifeguards on the North Shore post "No Swimming" signs on the beach. This is intended for inexperienced ocean goers. I don't think you're going to keep Andy Irons and the local surf crew out of the water when the waves get big. That's how they like 'em!

My spouse and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai last September. I dream about it at least once a week. Poipu beach, in particular, features prominently in my dreams. I truly feel like I left a piece of myself there, and can't wait to return to reclaim it. I'm particularly excited to introduce our daughter (now just a toddler) to this magical place.
Mar 08, 2007 6:17PM
We will be visiting Kauai the first week in September. We've stayed at Poipu in the winter months and loved the snorkeling at Poipu Beach Park.
However, this time we are trying to decide whether to stay on the North Shore (near Tunnels Beach) or stay again in Poipu.
Which beach would you recommend for the best (and safest) snorkeling in September? Poipu Beach Park or Tunnels?
Are there usually turtles at Tunnels?
Thanks for your help!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 09, 2007 1:59PM
@ Lynn: As you can see in the seasonal surf trends, surf heights on the North and South shores during September are very similar. So your best and safest snorkeling will all depend on current ocean conditions while you are here.
Since this is the case, maybe you should make your decision based on what part of the island you liked better. Poipu will have closer proximity to shopping and restaurants while Tunnels will be more adventurous.
And yes, there are turtles at tunnels : )

@ Cinda: It is the surf season on the South Shore during summer. This does not mean there will be large surf everyday. Most days, this beach park will be great for swimming, just ask the lifeguard before you go into the water.
Mar 20, 2007 6:11PM
Me husband and I are planning to visit Kauai at the end of May 2007. Last time we had our honeymoon at Maui. It was just wonderful! Now someone told me that Poipu is a good place for peaceful swimming and snorkeling. Which beach do you think is best at that time of year? I'm not a grate swimmer and afraid that I will choose some "cool surf beach". That could be a disaster :(
Thank you for your help

Mar 22, 2007 11:29PM
@ Natalia: Poipu is a great place to vacation, and this beach has a good spot to learn to snorkel. But if you look at the seasonal surf trends you will see that May is the beginning of the South Shore's surf season. This does not mean that there won't be good days for snorkeling. Just be sure to check with the lifeguard at this beach or refer back to this website for daily ocean conditions.
Another option will be to drive down to the North Shore for a day of snorkeling (ocean conditions permitting). Tunnels and Ke'e have some awesome reefs.

I will be visiting Kauai the first week of July with my 4 year old and 10 year old what beach do you recommend for snorkeling and swimming?
Mar 27, 2007 11:26AM
My wife and I will be staying in Poipu the first week in May. Understanding that weather conditions change. What would normally be the best spots for a morning swim (an hour or so before we start out for the day)? 6:00 to 7:00am.
I work for the State Parks in San Diego. Silver Strand State Beach. We enjoy hikes, rain forests? If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. We're looking forward to visiting Kauai again. Sincerely Ish

My wife and I are taking our daughter and granddaughter to Poipu mid-April. We have rented a beachfront condo at Kiahuna Plantation for 8 nights and finishing with 2 nights at the Hyatt.
Here's my question/concerns. I am wanting to both snorkel and bodyboard (I'm 52). Is Kiahuna Beach appropriate for both of these in that season? Do I need to go to Poipu Beach Park for snorkeling? I thought that in previous visits that I've seen people snorkeling near the Sheraton.
WE CAN'T WAIT!! Great website, guys.

@ Elizabeth: For young children, I would recommend this beach. It has a park and a perfect swimming area for them. They'll absolutely love it!
@ Ishman: Of course, ocean conditions permitting, there can be many great places to swim in Poipu during May. This is the beginning of the surf season, though, so check for that days ocean conditions. If you're looking for a dip in the ocean, this beach is really nice. I'm assuming you mean a long swim. If this is the case, I would try Prince Kuhio's (a.k.a. PK's). The inside of PK's is protected by a reef so even if there are small waves it can still be good for swimming. If it's really flat (no waves), Shipwrecks and Maha'ulepu are the best, though.
There are many great hikes on the island. We are currently building a hiking guide. It will launch by Summer.
@ Ray: There is good snorkeling at Kiahuna when there are no waves. However, you are visiting in April, so there could be waves on the South Shore during this time. This is not to say that some days won't be flat and perfect for snorkeling. For your length of stay on the South Shore, you should be able to both snorkel and bodyboard.

May 16, 2007 9:43AM
Aloha! This summer I will be going to Kauai for a second time and I am in love with this beach! It is fantastic and I would totally recommend it! I was wondering how high is the shark attack rate on Kauai?
Jun 14, 2007 5:51AM
My husband and I are visiting Hawaii for the second time, but this is our first time to Kauai this July. With little knowledge we booked a room at the Sheraton on the South Shore. We both enjoy the beach and the mountains and I am now wondering if we should have booked something on the North Shore? We are looking to enjoy the outdoor experience of Kauai. I was wondering if you could tell me the major differences?
Gratefully yours,
Jo

Jun 14, 2007 8:08AM
Jo - each shore has different qualities and merits. South is generally sunnier and there is some great exploring there. You should definitely go check out Mahaulepu and do some hiking in Kokee as well (check out our new hiking section). That said, the North Shore beauty is unmatched - but less hotels and higher prices.

My husband and I are vacationing in Kauai mid to late November. Any tips?

Inline with the above question, five of us are vacationing in Kauai the last week of November. We can't seem to decide where to stay. It seems the remainder of my paragraph didn't post, the rest was ...but it seems more logical to stay on the east side so we are more in the middle of everything. We all love the water, and would want to be out doing as many water activities as possible. Does anyone have any pros/cons about the west side versus the east side? We would be grateful for any advice or suggetions!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 23, 2007 9:00AM
Amanda - Waimea is great for sunsets over the island of Niihau and I highly recommend the Waimea Plantation Cottages if you want to experience true Hawaiian style relaxation (I live in Hanalei and we go there for on-island getaways). In November North and West shore surf will be active and South shores will be generally calm. Please see our guides section for seasonal surf trends and more helpful info. WW

I am visiting Kauai for the first time in December, with a large group (9 of which are children) I've been debating between the Outrigger on Poipu and the Outrigger Waipouli Beach up on the East Shore. which would you recommend?

preferences or suggestions?
Jun 29, 2007 5:01AM
Is Brennecke's Beach near Po'ipu Beach Park? We are staying in a place across the street from Brennecke's Beach and wondered if we could walk to Po'ipu Beach Park from Brennecke's Beach or will we need to drive? We will be there in July. Is there much shopping near that area - the others like to do the hiking, exploring route while I prefer the beaches, shopping, relaxing, nightlife and sightseeing. Am I going to be able to enjoy my preferred hobbies? Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 29, 2007 7:17AM
Brenneke's is at the East end of Poipu Beach park. The beach used to have more sand before hurricane Iwa (pre Iniki) took most of it away. Poipu has some shopping and there is a great hike to Mahaulepu. Please check out the hiking section of our website.
Jul 13, 2007 4:05PM
I\'ve read that Poipu has high surf in the summer but today it said 1 to 3 feet. Is it swim??. I will be visiting poipu this month around the 20th. I hope the surf stays the same. What do you think?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 13, 2007 4:58PM
The general trend is for South shore surf to be active from May-Sept. and North / West shores to be active Sept. - May. There is some overlap and there are also out-of-season swells. Just because it is surf season on the South shore in summer does NOT mean that the surf will be up ALL of the time. Just keep checking our Ocean Report.
Jul 15, 2007 3:18PM
I will be on Kauai the last week of Jan and 1st week of February 2008, and we are staying on the East shore in Kapaa. Based upon what I have read, the most calm area for safer snorkeling will be the South beaches. What is the water temp like? I have a shorty wet suit and want to know if it is worth bringing. It is black with a purple stripe down each side. I know this may sound silly, but does wearing a wet suit make you look like possible "prey" to the sea life? Also, are gloves necessary while snorkeling?
Jul 15, 2007 4:20PM
Is the beach crowded if so when is the best time to go when the beach isn't as crowded?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 16, 2007 10:03AM
Melanie - the water will be warm and perhaps you'll get some West winds to make the East side offshore and nice. Personally I have worn all colors in the water without incident. A lot of people like to wear gloves - just please don't pick at the reef.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 16, 2007 10:04AM
Poipu is very popular - as with any location early morning will be less-crowded.

Im planning my first family vacation to Hawaii and hear that Kuai is the place to be. Im looking for an ocean front property and have heard many good things about Po'ipu Beach Park. Originally i was looking into Kapaa- and now am not sure. Can you tell me how they differ? Which is recommended for a family looking to vacation ocean front in early Oct.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 26, 2007 7:48AM
East-facing shores will generally have onshore winds (Easterly trade winds blow about 80% of the time). Onshore = choppy. Offshore / sideshore creates that nice texture that you see in picture books. The nice thing about this small island is that if one area is rough you usually can drive to the other side and find nice conditions.

We will vacationing in the Poipu area starting October 13, 2007 and want to snorkel several times. Oct. is right at the end of summer and the beginning of winter so I'm not sure where the best place is to snorkel North or South. What is the temperature around that time of year?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 27, 2007 7:43AM
October is a transition time and you just have to stay in tune with the conditions. North or South can be rough or epic during that time.
Aug 03, 2007 7:26PM
We will be spending our honeymoon from March 31 to April 7, 2008 near Poipu beach. This will be our first time to snorkel, is this generally a good time to snorkel? Do you recommend wet suits? Thanks!
Aug 06, 2007 3:45AM
Aloha!
I have noticed that no one has mentioned the incredible Hawaiian Monk Seals that frequent Poipu Beach. I fly in from Ohio to volunteer with the 'Hawaiian Monk Seal Conservation Hui' and spend a good deal of my time on Poipu putting up protection zones and educating visitors about these critically endangerd species. They only number about 1200 and come ashore to sleep and digest, so please, PLEASE do not approach or disturb them. They are large marine mammals that just want a quiet place to relax, and as wild animals, they will bite if they feel threatened.... Keep yourselves and the seals safe. Mahalo for your consideration!!
Aug 07, 2007 2:46PM
We just came back from our first vacation in Hawaii and we spent the first week of July in Kaua'i. There are so many favorite places I can't begin to name them all. I would advise checking out all the shores and as many beaches as you can as they are all very unique. I wish we had more time to see them all. We can't wait to go back!
Aug 12, 2007 5:25PM
I'm coming to the Poipu area next week and want to know if there are any good longboarding breaks? Thanks.
Aug 31, 2007 7:39PM
My husband and I are planning to visit Kauai at the end of November. We plan on doing a lot of snorkeling during our vacation but have heard that snorkeling during the winter is generally not a good idea because of the trade winds, surf conditions, and colder water temperature. Is this true of the southern part of the island like Poipu as well?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 01, 2007 6:56AM
Snorkeling is excellent in winter on Kauai - you just have to know where to go. South shores will generally be calmer but occasionally E and N will calm down during November. Trades are generally stronger in summer, so the lighter winds may work in your favor. Water temperatures are essentially the same.
Sep 03, 2007 2:04PM
I think one poster name Julie mentioned the monk seals, they often come ashore and have their babies at Poipu. You're lucky if you happen to be there when this happens. If they close the beach to protect the mother and baby, don't fret there are plenty of beaches. (I've seen people raise a fuss because of this)
Sep 15, 2007 6:11AM
We went to Piopu in April and it was great. We are now planning to return in July and I wanted to check where will be the best place for kids, so the waves are not too big?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 15, 2007 7:14AM
Summer surf is generally larger on the South shore and calmer North. Please see our seasonal surf trends guide.
Sep 18, 2007 8:02PM
Me & my wife will be vacationing on Kapaa Shores Resort in Kapaa in the months of March-April. Their website shows sandy beach behind the resort. Is this true? Is it good snorkeling and/or swimming place? We are middle-aged couples, is this a safe place in general? How's the traffic situation in the island during these months. What is the normal weather situation in the island during these months? We are first timers, what important tip can you give us to have an enjoyable stay in your island paradise? Thanks in advance as we look forward to being there.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 19, 2007 8:00AM
Kapaa is generally onshore because Easterly "trade" winds blow about 60-70% of the time. This means choppy seas for East-facing shores. Occasionally the wind blows offshore or is calm and the conditions can be beautiful. There are many rip currents along the shoreline so please consult lifeguards and the hotel staff for safe swimming info.
The traffic in Kapaa is always bad.
An important tip? Resist the urge to "see it all." Find a few spots that you like and relax. This beach guide should help. Aloha!

My family will be vacationing in the Poipu area in February. While we enjoy snorkeling, it is the boogieboarding beaches that we really want to find. Any suggestions?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 26, 2007 10:52AM
Alison - February will be great snorkeling but do not expect much surf on the South shore during the winter months. You can always drive to other shores and find surf - make sure to assess hazards, know your ability and consult lifeguards or locals.
Oct 04, 2007 12:33PM

Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 08, 2007 9:59AM
My local knowledge understands that the "official" Baby Beach is on the East shore in Kapaa. It is also known as Fuji beach and is close to the Waipouli beach park. There are other beaches to safely swim with little ones - which one depends on the current wind and sea conditions for your beach day.

Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 21, 2007 7:49AM
Hi Kath - this website is full of recommendations BUT if I were to choose one adventure it would be a hike to Hanakapiai Falls. Muddy, tough and beautiful - and you could swim under a Hawaiian waterfall.
If you want to relax then go check out Hanalei Bay or go snorkeling in Poipu.
Nov 25, 2007 7:45AM
Kath,
My husband and I will also be on a cruise that will be going around the islands. Ours is leaving Honolulu on Dec. 10th. Your question is the same one I was intending to ask. It would be fun to connect with someone beforehand. Are you planning on doing the hike?
Nov 25, 2007 1:29PM
This site has invaluable comments from your staff! I will be getting married on the island the week of March 9 -14 2008. I would like to learn how to snorkle and do some swimming but I am nervous after reading about all the riptides! I almost drowned in the Bahamas while swimming and got caught in a riptide or strong current. It was terrifying! Can you please advise on where it is safest for beginning swimmers and snorkling at that time of year? Also which trails are under an hour each direction for a hike? Is there anywhere that supplies picnic lunches? we would also like to kayak somewhere safe too! Can't wait to see your island this March!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 26, 2007 10:02AM
Roshee - the safest swimming will be at one of the lifeguarded beaches. Check the daily Ocean Report, then go to a lifeguarded location based on that report. Lots of hikes are under an hour (check the guides). Lots of good places to get picnic lunches and local delicacies. For Kayaking I recommend Kayak Hanalei. W

Randy - there are a number of good snorkeling areas on the South shore. Try the area near the Sheraton Kauai and down by Prince Kuhio. The one caution is that you must make sure there are no swells / advisories on your snorkeling day. Ask the lifeguards or locals.

Are there lockers?
Jan 24, 2008 8:14PM
This is such a great site -- just what I was looking for. My family (2 adults and a 10-year-old) will be on Kauai in late June and early July this year. I have been leaning toward staying in Poipu, mainly because I would like to swim with my son in the ocean and be able to do that easily from wherever we stay w/o driving. I am wondering if high surf in Poipu during that time is likely to prevent us from swimming safely. I don't mind driving in order to snorkel, but I would like to be staying at whatever beach we are using on a daily basis for swimming. I guess my question boils down to: Do you think we will be able to swim safely at Poipu during the summer months, or should I be looking only at the North shore? Thanks so much.

Jan 25, 2008 7:20AM
Aloha Sarah. Glad you found the site and are enjoying it. It is true that the North shore generally has smaller surf in the summer. If you're looking for a place to stay near a beach that would be likely to have more consistent swimming conditions, you may want to consider the Anini Beach area on the North Shore, as it is protected by a reef. Snorkeling can be found at beaches within short driving distances from this beach park. J

Visited in Mid-January. I had done much beach research (including this site), and thought Po'ipu would just be OK. Well, this beach offered incredible snorkeling and swimming. Yes, the rocky entry required reef shoes and some balance, but easily worth it. Also, didn't find it too crowded. So, in my book, it went from "OK" to my favorite on the island.

Nicole - it rarely rains ALL day here. The showers usually are passing and the temps are moderate. One nice thing about a little rain squall is that it clears out the beach, leaving it just for those who hang out. The beach near Princeville Hotel is small but nice and the walk to Hanalei is great from there (as long as the river is not flooded). Ask the hotel staff or check the website for current conditions. I found your website incredibly informative and plan to access it while I'm there to plan my days. One question, when your ocean report lists the visibility (good, fair, poor), is that the visibility underwater? Visibility is always important for good diving and snorkeling and I was concerned that we may be having an issue with all the run off from the rains on the island this last week. Any advice will be appreciated.
Eric.

Hi Eric - the listed visibility on our Ocean Report is for WATER visibility / clarity. Many beaches are seeing brown water right now because it rained hard last weekend (2-4). Usually takes a few days to clear. W

Hi Jeff - mid-summer your best bet for surf will be all along the South facing shores. Your board selection seems appropriate. Summer Easterly trade winds blow most of the time and will be offshore at many South shore breaks. Summer surf is not as large as Winter, but plenty powerful. Uncrowded? I don't think so. W

Any input on windsurfing beach locations, rental shops, etc for trip in mid March?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 17, 2008 6:52PM
Steve - people windsurf at Mahaulepu on the South Shore, Anini and Haena. The wind is not as strong or consistent as on Maui but March is a good month. W

wow- this site is great-its very addictive :)
I am planning a trip to kauai june 1-8 with a one year old, Im looking for accomodations ideally in an oceanfront condo on a beach that is calm, shallow and baby freindly, but also has access to great snorkeling (my husband and I are avid snorkelers). What beach on which side of the island offers that, also, any thoughts on where to stay thats on the beach and walking distance close to restaurants, stores etc? Im comparing staying at Kaanapali, Maui to Kauai-I\'d like to stay on the island that has the best crystal clear & calm beach with great snorkeling too! Also, is there a beach that offers the above thats mosquito-free (am I just expecting too much here?)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Feb 24, 2008 9:07PM
Hi Michelle - glad you are enjoying the Explorer addiction :). In Summer it is hard to beat the N. shore of Kauai for raw beauty and (mostly) calm ocean fun. Kaanapali has a lot more development. On Kauai you will NOT find condos on the beach - but Princeville is a short drive from some great locations. There are vacation homes in Hanalei and Haena - expect to pay $$$ and expect to be rewarded by the more exclusive, less crowded setup. Take your kid to Kee first thing in the AM and you will be stoked. Mosquitoes are around, but not down by the water.
As always, be careful around the ocean and ask locals for advice. W

What a great site! My husband and I will be staying near Poipu March 17th-24th. I am a huge snorkeling enthusiast and welcome any insights to the best places to visit with the most diverse aquatic life. Unfortunately we are on a tight budget; can you suggest any good spots/activities for frugal travelers? I also saw a comment that mentioned a zip line that caught my interest... could you tell me a little more about it or where to go?
Thanks, J.

Mar 05, 2008 8:17PM
Aloha Jaemie. Fortunately, Kauai is so filled with natural beauty, those on a budget can enjoy many outdoor activities for free. You'll see the hikes and beaches listed on this site. Generally, surf is smaller on the South and West sides this time of year. Poipu beach park is a recommended snorkel/swim spot. Should the waves be small on the North shore, you can also check out Haena Beach park.
As for a Zipline activity, we don't recommend specific companies, but an online search for "kauai zipline tour" will pull up a couple of island companies' websites.
Hope this helps. Aloha. J

Coming to Poipu middle April 2008. What can I expect average surf conditions to be in spring time.
Mar 10, 2008 7:39PM
My daughter is getting married near Poipu this August. Where is the best place to look for affordable vacation rentals tht will be reasonably close to the wedding location? Thanks, I find your site very useful.

Aloha Veronica. We do not recommend any particular vacation rentals but we do encourage our site users to support our sponsors. The Parrish Collection Kauai sponsors the Mahaulepu beach and trail pages on this website and information about the company can be found there. You can also contact the Poipu Beach Resort Association at poipubeach.org for information about the Poipu area and what is offered there. J

Aloha Jim. Surf conditions are difficult to predict. Generally speaking, the North & West shores sees swells Sept - May, with the South swells coming in May - Sept. If you're in Poipu in April you may be traveling West or to the North shore to get the best surf. Have fun! J
Mar 11, 2008 2:23PM
Is the surf break offshore in the center of the bay in front of the Shearton at Po\'ipu called Waiohai or First Break?
Thanks

Mar 14, 2008 1:56AM
Aloha Kevin. Kauai is well known for keeping its surfbreaks as quiet as possible. As a surfer, I'm sure you can appreciate that and will enjoy your own explorations. J

My family will be traveling to Kauai the first week of June 2008. We will have young kids, 7 years to 3 years. What are your suggestions for activities and places to visit. I would like to do some hikes, but not sure what would be appropriate for the kids. Also, looking forward to any educational events, activities to take the kids to introduce them to the native culture, enviornments and nature of Kauai.

Aloha Carla. Lydgate Park and the adjoining Path are a great place to take children to enjoy beach, picnic and playgrounds. Check out our site's Ecovents page to see what ecology events are taking place during your stay. It highlights guided hikes and beach clean ups. Check out our site's Native Species page for info about the tropical botanical gardens and their tours, too. This link http://www.kauaifestivals.com/ will show you other events taking place on the island.
Enjoy! J

My husband & I plan to celebrate our 35th anniversary in mid May,09 in Kauai. We love the beach, snorkeling and maybe some diving. We also would like to see the canyons and waterfalls, etc. Where would be the best side of the island for us? Can't wait to get there!
Mar 18, 2008 10:40PM
I'm headed to Kauai this Sunday for two weeks....have visited at this same time of year for the last few years. I surf a bit an am looking for the best options. Brennekes is a bit challenging for me still but the Sheraton break isn't tough enough. Any suggestions?
Also. Want to hike the first couple of miles of the Napali Coast with my 9 and 6-year old boys....they are relatively athletic.....are they still too young to handle the first part of the trail?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 19, 2008 7:38AM
Hi Mary. As a surfer you'll probably understand why we won't be naming too many specific breaks. The fun is discovering them for yourself. Depending on conditions, you may also want to check out Hanalei Bay. As for hiking, only you know your children's level of ability. It's uphill on rocks the whole first section, but if you're not attached to getting to Hanakapiai, you could hike a shorter distance and get to a lookout point. J

Aloha Sharon. The South side (Poipu) may be a good spot as a homebase, being that Waimea canyon is on the West, snorkeling at Poipu Beach Park on the South side and waterfalls can be viewed in Wailua on the East side. Contact a local dive shop for more info about where they go. Enjoy! J
Mar 25, 2008 4:19AM
Our family just returned from Kaui on 3/22. We visited several beaches on the South Shore, but ended up returning most days to Po'ipu. Po'ipu allowed us to swim and snorkle in relatively calm waters during a fairly high surf week. And, we could walk "next door" to Brenneke beach for some excellent body boarding. Plenty of public parking, restrooms, and a deli across the street made a full day at the beach easy and enjoyable for everyone.
Apr 07, 2008 4:17AM
Very impressed with the website and greatly appreciate the information. I am planning to come to Hawaii in July for my honeymoon. My fiance and I have never surfed and are not boogie-boarders in the official sense of the word - but we do like to play in the waves and really want a beach with waves. It sounds like Po'ipu is one of our best bets that time of year. Are there other beaches on Kauai or on other islands that you can recommend for relatively easy access and reasonable chance of waves? I realize you don't do lodging recs but our plan is to find a beach that fits these criteria and has a hotel so that we don't even have to travel to get to the waves! Thanks very much.

Apr 07, 2008 8:35PM
Aloha Rachel. Keep in mind that the South shore gets high surf in the summer months. Poipu Beach is lifeguarded, so check in with a lifeguard before going out. There are plenty of accommodations near this beach. Checking in with the Poipu Beach Resort association at poipubeach.org could help you find the best spot. Enjoy. J

Where is the best place to camp in June on the south shore of Kauai?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2008 6:53PM
Hi Frank. You may want to check out Salt Pond, just outside of Hanapepe town. It's one of the only campspots on the south side and offers facilities at a beach park off the beaten path but not too far from quaint Hanapepe town. We highlight this beach in our Beaches section. You'll need a permit, of course. Otherwise, head further west and you can camp at Polihale for a very remote experience. Enjoy. J
Apr 18, 2008 6:24PM
@ Kauai Explorer Staff: "Yes, we would not recommend surfing at Poipu Beach Park. Try Hanalei Bay during the summer, you'll be stoked!"
Are you sure about that? Maybe if you've never surfed before ;)
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 18, 2008 10:36PM
Hi "E" - Poipu Beach Park is not a good spot for beginners. Hanalei is easy because of sand bottom and, yes, beginning surfers can find friendly waves to ride there even in summer. The advice in this forum admittedly leans towards safety. W

What can I expect the beach and water conditions to be in Po'ipu at the end of August? We have a 5-year old. Will the baby beach be calm?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 25, 2008 4:06PM
You can't predict ocean conditions exactly, but generally the South shore sees a swell in the summertime. The ocean report on this site and the lifeguards at Poipu Beach Park can give you the most accurate info once you're here. If you're looking for more flat conditions in August, you may want to check out Lydgate, Anini or Hanalei Bay. Enjoy your stay. J

yeh, the wave on the south side rocks... you just have to know what you are doing!! if you are not familiar with the reef and the direction of the swell then you will be lost! i'm on my way out there right now....eheheheh. this site is pretty good!!!

I\'m planning to visit Kauai this August with my wife and daughter (2 yrs old). I am a novice to intermediate surfer and would love to stay somewhere I can surf every day. I don\'t need huge waves, but big enough to surf on a shorter board. On the other hand, my wife would like a nice beach and some amenities nearby (e.g., restaurants, maybe a spa). We both also enjoy natural beauty and hiking, but obviously can\'t get too extreme with a 2 year old. Sooo..... What\'s the best beach for us?
May 12, 2008 8:10AM
Planning on going here in January 2009 for honeymoon. What is the temperature like at this time, Air and Water. Also any cliffs or water falls you can jump from that are safe 20 to 30 ft high?

May 12, 2008 9:11PM
You may be on the right path with Poipu Beach, but surf can be big here in the summer. Hard to predict. Stay tuned with this site's ocean report and ask the lifeguard on duty. Hanalei is another location that could serve all, but in August, it is likely that this bay will have more lake-like conditions. You may have to check out a few beaches to get it all. Enjoy. J

Aloha Jarrett. Water temperatures vary throughout the year by between 71 and 81 degrees, the coldest being during winter. The air temp remains in the 70s during the days and can dip into the high 60s in winter (usually at night). It is not recommended to jump off of any cliffs or waterfalls, as this has taken lives. Do an online search for guided tours to Kipu Falls and you can go with a company that will give you a safe experience with some jungle falls. Enjoy! J

We're coming the Kauai first week in July off a cruise ship and want to come to a beach. We are renting a car and would like to come to a relatively calm beach, with parking, restrooms and restaurants. Can you provide me with a list of beaches with maybe some resort ammenties?

Aloha. For most of the teens on Kauai, time is spent at the beach. Making sure your teens are aware of important safety precautions in the ocean and while hiking, is very important. As for other fun activities, the Sheraton hosts an outdoor movie night in that area. You may want to check with the Poipu Beach Resort Association, as well, for more info/ideas: http://www.poipu-beach.org/

Aloha! My family and I just returned home to Alaska after visiting Kaua'i. how wonderful. And this beach...Poipu, the best for ones with little ones in tow. My 23 month old enjoyed the the protected area as did his father and I. My best friend was also there with her two girls and they had fun there also. The rest of us enjoyed the sun. We came to Poipu beach park 3 times during our stay on the island. Mahalo and Aloha!

We are planning a family trip (which includes our 4 college age guys and gals) for the 5th of May of 2009. We can't decide if we should stay on the North or South side of the island. We would like to be on a swimmable beach. Also, we are from Florida and we are decent snorkelers. Which side is most known for calmer waters in May? In addition to that do you have any suggestions for a snorkeling trip? Should we reserve a snorkel trip on a boat? Or are there really good snorkeling spots from shore? So often when we travel (in the Caribbean for example) we get involved in snorkeling that is really meant for beginners and there isn't much to see. We have grown accustomed to the amount of coral and marine life that we see in the Florida Keys. Do you know how the snorkeling compares?
Thank you for your help. This website is very informative!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 23, 2008 7:23AM
Aloha Michelle, check out our seasonal surf trends page to see the graph on ocean conditions year round. May is the ending of big surf on the North shore and the beginning of larger conditions on the South shore. Still keep abreast of the ocean report and speak with lifeguards when you're here. Makua is a well known North shore beach for snorkeling (also highlighted on this site). If you enjoy tours, a snorkel trip down the Na Pali would be a good bet too, as the coastline is breathtaking and the area pristine. J

Would you please recommend the calmest times of the day for scuba diving and safe from under-tow currents and swells in Poipu Beach Kauai from July 11, 2008 for 2 weeks. Please recommend other nearby beaches for first-time scuba diving save from sharks also. I will be staying at Kiahuna Plantation South Shore. Thank you.

HI Robert. The summer sees bigger waves and more dangerous ocean conditions on the South side. Lifeguards at Poipu Beach Park can let you know specifics for the days you are visiting. Conditions change throughout the day and cannot be predicted precisely. You can also check out Ocean Report and ask the front desk where you stay. J

Aloha Luke. The island generally sees small to medium surf around the island in Sept. Check out our Seasonal Surf Trends page: http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
Kalapaki may have some waves happening again. Check our ocean report while you're here. J

Aloha,
Kauai Explorer is one of the neatest sites I have found. Great links to NOAH, etc.
I am interested in finding out if there is a correlation between tides and wave height. For example, do most big/high waves occur during high tides? Is it generally calmer during low tides?
From looking at NOAH websites, etc. I can see that predicting ocean conditions is a really complex science, and definately not an exact science.
Thank you for your thoughts on this! Keep up the great work!
Maureen

Aug 04, 2008 7:44PM
Aloha Maureen. Thanks for the feedback. There is some correlation between tides and wave heights, but swells are generated by wind from storms usually far away from the islands. The tides influence how these swells play out locally, but do not change the actual height of the swell. The area of coastline is really the depending factor in how much influence a tide will have on wave. For example, a surf break on a reef might hardly break at all during a high tide, but there will be powerful waves there at low tide during the same swell. Another thing the tide influences is how far the waves surge up the beach, but not necessarily changing the surf heights. More water means that waves will wash up higher on the beach and might 'seem' bigger. J

Hi Jay. It's hard to predict exact conditions, but you may want to look at our sit'es Seasonal Surf Trends page:

Aloha! My husband and I are planning a trip to Kauai the first week of September. He is an experienced surfer and I want to make sure he has a good time. What would be a good area to stay in that would give us access to the best surfing beaches for that time of year? I should also add that we aren't into huge resorts and mass tourism.
Thanks so much!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 11, 2008 8:18PM
Aloha Brenda. September is the time of year when surf is usually between small and medium sized, island-wide. Take a look at our Seasonal Surf Trends page:
http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
Poipu tends to have a bit more of a resort-like kind of feeling. Areas north of Hanalei are much more remote. Kapaa could be a central location area to travel from, depending on where surf conditions are best. The town is busy, though areas in the hills above it, like Wailua and Kapahi, are more 'country'. These spots generally have their share of vacation rentals. Enjoy! J
